idea for heating

I looked around my house for something or somewhere that kept between 80 and 90 degrees. I noticed my air conditioner unit on the outside of my house blows out warm air. I tested it and its within the nominal range (88 degrees). I just put the jars in the box they came in along with an thermometer and then put the whole box in a sack that I sprayed 409 in (to control contams), and I set the whole thing on the grate on my back yard AC unit. Also im very careful to not cover to much of the grate with my little science project. Doing so makes your AC unit work harder and wastes electricity. At night I bring them in and they slowly cool down to about 75 degrees and in the morning I do the whole thing again. This is my first time trying this but my jars are colinizing like mad

Heh, it's amazing what we'll go through to not have to build a damn incubator. My cat used to keep his box of jars on a shelf above his stereo receiver, which produced generous amounts of heat when on. The temps fluctuated a lot, but it worked for him.
Then he built a simple incubator (submersible fish tank heater and two steriltie bins) and he's much happier now. Maybe he's just a lazy kitty, but he wants to have to do as little extra work as possible for this hobby.
Seriously though dude, build yourself an incubator. You'll thank me for it later.

I built an incubator, it got bumped and water got on the lids of my jars and all of them contaminated overnight. I want to stay away from anything to do with water that might harbor contaminents. That is why I chose to go without an incubator this time. I dont mind having to think about the jars a couple of times a day. It keeps me posted on how thy little guys are doing.

u could just pour a load of bleach/peroxide into the water at the bottom of the incubator, that will keep any contams out

Some Thoughts: The bottom line with deciding between all of these different ways of keeping your jars somewhat warm to speed colonization is to evaluate where you are in the hobby. Your mentality in the hobby dictates what kind of equipment you need and how much you're are willing to invest to further feed your interest in said hobby.
With your very first set of jars out, there's no need for incubators or anything because you're just starting out. It seems best to just improvise while you learn more, progress and decide more positively that you want the fun-guys to remain an important part of your life. Then you decide how often you want the fun-guys to be around, which in turn justifies any upgrades to your overall system and personal knowledge base. Just as the steps go from the "atop the AC/water-heater in-box" idea TO the "fishtank-heater & sterilite job" TO a fully-featured electronicly-active-controlled microenvironment for every stage and need of the fungus' life cycle; there's a noticable step associated with the move from the brf/verm jars to owning a decent PC or Steroclave, in turn moving up on to a plethora of more efficient substrates. This trend seems to stay rather true as the whole friendship & experience with the fun-guys gradually matures.
All of the neccessary basics for the cutivation of any kind of mushrooms are out there on the web(in the archives of forums on the web such as 'The Shroomery', per chance), in books and in knowledge-furthering institutions abroad. One of the main challenges in this hobby of growing crops of magical fruit is aquiring the patience needed for the slow learning process that can't be bypassed when you're first starting out. They will grow if you give them decent environmental parameters, keep your proverbial shit straight and your cow shit moist. ...hehe... Holy shit, I just realized I've been babling like fucking mad. Smoking doobs all night will do that to you in the a.m. I'll guess I'll just say that I think everyone's own special way of getting their mycological cherrie's run through is part of the fun. Nuf sed.

You must not have made the right kind of incubator. If you make the one with 2 rubbermaid tubs siting on top of each other with a fish tank heater, the jars stay in the top rubbermaid container away from the water b/c the water is in the bottom one, no where near your jars.

Yeah, I say incubating them at 82 degrees works perfectly. The jars produce heat them selve and they will make up the remaining degrees. If you are a little more careful you can just submerge your heater in bucket of water and put next to your jars in a box. Just be mindful. And let your jars incubate with the foil still on the lids. save a lot of effort in the accidental case of something gettin in you didn't want.
