Desktop audio help...

I want to get better sound out of my desktop. I have an old home theater system that doesn't work. There are two solid cooper wires that come out the back of the sub box. Is there a way to incorporate atleast the subwoofer to help my d/t speakers?

i'd go get a computer multimedia surround system..
got mine for $50 at sam's on sale like 3 years ago it sounds awesome and is cool.
you're gonna need an amp to push your sub and i doubt your current computer speakers have any wattage to push it.
instead of buying an amp for that sub, i'd just go get one of these, this is what i got:

logitech x 350 or 530 or something like that.

I had those speakers from the link. They're not bad. Always bumped them in my dorm. Gave them away when I left tho. I bought them for like 70 bucks from best buy too. I'd just buy a hundred dollar boombox and connect it with some white and red cords. It can bump way harder and you can hook it up from a decent TV too.

Couldn't I use the amp from the theater system? Or is that way off base? I don't know much about sound, or even electronics, but I want to learn.
Thanks

im pretty sure you can hook your sound from your computer into a home theater, but you prob need a more recent sound card, and a more recent theater system. They make some decent comptuer systems(klipsch) but i think they are over priced

Does your sub only have the single pair of input? Some subs will have a built in highpass filter, and outputs to connect your speakers.

if you have the amp from your theater you can just get a 3.5mm to rca cable and plug one end into your sound card and the other into the input on your receiver (theater amplifier)
then just hook the speakers up and change the input to 'auxiliary' or whatever and eq it a little bit and it should work assuming yo shit aint broke.
i'd hook it up for you but i live in tx.

I have a 20 yr old Onxyo home theater amp, that i bought for $20
and 25 yr old pair of Realistic 8"/3"/2" speakers, free.
All you need is a 3.5mm to rca cable.
Plug the rca into your amp, any input will work, except Phono.
Then the 3.5mm into your audio out.
And yes, if the sub is part of the system, you can put it in, just wire it into the sub out.
Most are even color coded, so you shouldent be able to mess it up.

Thanks for the answers everyone. In reply, yes, there is only the one (regular speaker wire) input. A 3.5mm to rca cable, yeah that's it. Provided I might be able to get this thing working. I gave a guy $5 at a yardsale knowing it didn't work just for the purpose of playing with it. The system itself is kicking off at power up, but displays an error message, I might be able to get it working.

It's not powering up, it displays an error code. After researching, it seems theres a pretty good chance it's the voltage regulator. I'm going to call a cert. repair service. My question is basically, should I trust him? I am skittish about auto mechanics, the last thing in the world I would tell someone to do is take their car to a mechanic.
Thanks

Id say cut your losses it was only $5.
Go to a flee market, or pawn shop, walmart, wherever and pick up a 2 channel amp, with or without sub out.
Wattage isnt critical, just dont be below say 50-75w, or above 200w. You can go more, but your speakers and wallet might not like it.
If you want surround sound, for whatever reason, make sure its dolby digital amp. You wont have true 5.1, but your pc is only pushing out stereo any way(L/R). unless you have a good soundcard that a fiber optic, or all 6 outs.
KEEP the speakers you have, unless you want new ones. Just plug em in, Left, Right, and SUB, (if the amp has a sub out). If you have Dolby, then L rear and R rear too. And put where you want.
If you want a sub, and the amp doesnt have an out, you can put it in the left channel, along with the left speaker.
Also, it will have to be a powered sub. If the sub doesnt have a plug to go in to the wall, its a PASSIVE sub.
In that case you have to run the left and right speaker outs FROM the AMP, TO the SUB, then FROM the SUB, TO the speakers. And the sub will draw its power from the left and right speakers. I advise against this, its annoying, and not very loud, or clear.
Just get a powered sub. One plug to the wall and a RCA to Sub out, or you can cut one end of the rca off, srip it back a bit, and take the two wires to the left speaker out of the amp.
Again, if you want just sound and some thump, thats all you need. If you want TRUE 5.1 surround, then alot of this changes
And if you have any other questions feel free, i used to install REALLY high end home theater systems. So this is well within my realm of knowledge.

I'm Ecstatic! Look what I found today:

...and here's the icing on the cake (no pun intended)

Yep, the sticker on the w/c dispenser says $3, and it came with 7 cartridges GAHHH! That's my animals cd awesome TEO! See, even though I was researching, alot of it was greek to me, but your little answer gave me the understanding to know what I was looking at when I saw it. I paid 5 smakers for it and it works perfect. I also knew what I was looking at on the back, it has s-video and a bunch of other jacks. It also has a cassette tape player in the top Sorry if I sound like a giddy little schoolgirl, I just wanted to let you know how much you've helped me. Thank you!
