Rye jar quickie question...
    #8212444 - 03/29/08 09:36 PM (16 years, 21 days ago)

I know this is dumb, but I am a bit concerned with one of my jars.  Its not contaminated or anything like that, BUT...

There is one lone grain stuck to the side (from when I shook them up the other day) and its moldy (the good kind - errr, its covered in mycelium  ) but its all alone, and I assume looking for its pals as it has turned into a fuzz ball.

Will this cause some trouble later on?

Should I shake up the jar again just to get that off there?

first of all, there are no good kinds of mold in mycology. i'm sure you mean covered in mycelium. it really doesn't matter too much. it won't decrease your spawn or cause problems if you leave it there. you can shake it if it really bothers you but you'll need to wait longer for 100% colonization after the shake.

Is there any good mold? I would get that grain out if its the only one like that in there. Any pics?

Why would a colonized grain be a problem. Worry about the uncolonized grain stuck to the sides that would mean you may have made it to wet. Some attach them selfs to the side when they colonize. The whole jar will be like that when its done.

If there is one thing I know how to do its make grain jars.

You're right...its covered in mycelium, the jar (hell all of them) otherwise is colonizing rather quickly (should be ready by the next weekend).  I just wanted to make sure it didn't "die", turn into a zombie and cause a panic at the disco, which means I would have to nuke it from orbit just to be sure...

And I have reached my lame shitty joke quota for the month...

Camera is dead, and charging - so no pics.

EDIT:  I have been on the look out for "wet" spots, and there has been none at all, I'm actually surprised by this being my first grain jars, and what a mess I made of inoculation for all of them to be colonizing like champs, even the runt, without a single sign of contamination of any kind...

I appreciate the responses, just a bit twitchy I guess...

no worries, patience and not checking our jars every three minutes are two things we all try to achieve in this hobby. good job on your first grains.

Why thank you, but I won't call the jars a success until I tub 'em. I have put fourth a lot of effort to not become impatient, and its getting easier as the days go by...
