I want to send my dad large (>1GB) files. Email is too small. How can I do this easily and for free?

HTTP File Server (HFS)

Get a client each, exchange a password, let your dad into a designated folder of your harddrive.
Problem solved.

hmmm, doesnt seem to work behind my router. It gives me my local LAN ip address to give out, but that wont work from a computer outside my LAN. I can have it give me the external address, but that doesnt work it just times out. The ip address I give out should be a combination of both my local and wide ip address right?

u need to give your "outside ip addy" and forward the port yall are using to your "inside ip addy". u may need to add the port to the firewall exceptions.

p.s. portforward.com for more info.

u can always use utorrent.

Does µTorrent have an embedded tracker?

Yes, it does. You can turn it on by enabling bt.enable_tracker in the Advanced section. However, it is a very simple tracker, with no web interface, or even the ability to see what torrents are hosted on it. It is not designed for anything requiring security or large-scale. A stand-alone tracker is much better for this. It allows all torrents, external or not, to be tracked on it when enabled.

Once you have enabled it, you can use it by simply putting the tracker's URL into a torrent. The tracker URL is http://your.ip:port/announce (port being µTorrent's incoming port). IP can be external or internal, depending on if you want to use it in a LAN or across the Internet.

you can actually use IRC to transfer files to friends directly too...

don't know how the performance would be though, but it is worth a try.

peace

Yes, I got the HFS to work! Thank you very much Wiccan. I simply had to amend the ip address with :port, thx Shaggy.

This is the best solution for me because it allows for file browsing, also now I can access my home files from school.

You can use a file shaing program like Limewire.

+1
just use bittorrent - trackerless torrents are the way to go.

limewire fails, if u insist on using programs like that, at least go for soulseek.
