invitro dunk for sclerotia

A friend is growing some Psilocybe Atlantis #7. She's already inoculated a few rye berry jars. The problem is that she has a hard time getting the moisture content right- she thought she had the right content, but looking at the jars, they seem dry. I was wondering if she might want to inject a few CCs of sterilized water into the jar once it's fully colonized and then suck up any excess after a day. I remember reading that sclerotia forms partially in response to rough conditions, but I also know that sclerotia is 70% water by weight and that if the grain gets too dry, it might affect sclerotia production. Has anyone tried this? Were there any practical problems to be aware of? To sterilize my needles, I usually suck up some 70% isopropyl alcohol, let sit for a few minutes, expel the alcohol, and then suck up some boiling water to rinse out he alcohol. Would this be sufficient for reasonable sterility?

Sclerotia needs less water than you'd think.

I wouldn't futz with water content... just let 'em do what they do.

Should be, make sure to let the water cool after you boil it. Also I was under the impression that sclerotia should be grown on rye grass not rye berries

Either works fine.

Sclerotia will grow on almost any grain.

OK, I guess that's not happening then unless she decides to try it on one jar to experiment. Should she keep the tinfoil "cap" on the jars to help prevent dehydration through evaporation or would that suffocate the mycelium?

I think the foil should stay on but don't take that as a knowledgeable opinion. Since the pf tek advises covering holes I'd say that you should keep it covered, I don't think the myc will suffocate

oh wow, i didnt know that, i thought rye grass seed was the best substrate for the sclerotia forming strains...... good to know.

I think it's still the best, but not the exclusive. Means I can order rye bags for future runs. I'll still want to try it with the grass though
