are my san pedro OK?
    #8197594 - 03/26/08 05:14 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

There seems to be a slight discoloration towards the base of my 2 cacti. They turned a little yellow at the bottom and it is slightly soft. pics will be up soon

if theyre soft at the bottom, its prolly rot, cut it off a couple inches above the rot and root the top part

ur prolly overwatering

overwatering IS easy to do, generally if you are watering them at all, just stop.

I was thinking that it could be water. I do not water them too much, but I guess I drench them when I do. They both seem pretty healthy and have been growin since then. So should I wait before I chop them down?

oh ya, cut that sucker before it spreads

drenching it could be the problem

i water my plants with just a pump sprayer, theyre all doing fine, usually about a liter feeds all my plants fine

far more people kill plants by overwatering then underwatering

btw hows your drainage, and what kind of soil are you using?

The drainage isnt too good, But They are in pretty big pots so the soil is nice and dry. I used miracle grow brand cactus soil.

cacti like it when the soil is barely damp, you need some really good drainage if youre going to soak down the soil

yes, but he didnt say he had transplanted it

and he also said that it was getting soft where the discoloration is

sounds like rot to me

when cacti need water they get soft like that to, i have noticed right now on my dormant cacti that the tips are nice and the lower half of the cacti are soft(in need of water)

another thing is when some people use sand in there mixes
or put layers of sand on top it packs like cement when the sand is not course enough and stops water from soaking down or keeps water in the bottom not letting it drain.

it very well could be rot but at least be sure before hacking it up. you could re pot it in bone dry soil and see if it helps.

I actually did transplant them, I completely forgot:tongue: It's still pretty firm there, it's just slightly softer. So I guess they are OK:thumbup: I will still keep a lookout to see if it spreads. I also realized that one has a pup coming from the top.

still, change your watering habits, less water more often is usually better than drenching it less often

Also if you are not sure if they need watering, the best thing is to do is to stick ur little finger about a 1cm down in the soil and you will be able to see if it is moist or dry.

Good Luck
