A plea for help for a wrongly imprisoned man
    #8204048 - 03/28/08 12:33 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I know this isn't really the right place for this kind of thing because most of you won't care about this particular situation, but lots of people here are close to me and this is damn near the closest thing to a community I have right now.

My martial arts coach's coach (also the man who coached Rulan Gardner to the 2000 Olympic gold) is in jail right now on false charges are in danger of being extradited to Poland. His name is Roman and he's one of the coolest and nicest people anyone would ever met. He's been imprisoned and Poland is demanding his extradition simply because he wrote a book about the deplorable treatment and unlawful actions towards the world class athletes under the communist government of Poland. If he's sent back to Poland he will almost certainly be executed. The Polish embassy has threatened US and all we're doing is trying to raise money for a lawyer so he can fight this horrible injustice. Here's a letter my coach sent to me, if anybody is willing or able to help in any way it would be amazing.

Hi Everyone.
The judge has recieved all of your letters, thank you for your support!
We have gotten Roman an extension and now are looking to do a few things to ensure he does not get extradicted and sent back to Poland where he will face serious repercussions.

1- Get the word out, please let as many people as you know what is going on with this case.
As many of you know, we were threatened by the Polish embassy for trying to help Roman. If they are doing this to us, imagine what they will do to him if he gets sent back.
If you know anyone that has links to media, we would like to get the word out via paper, television, etc, anyone that can do a story so that the more people that know what is going on, the more likely Poland will not want the bad publicity and drop the case.

2- We have fired his attorney from before who was not familiar with extradition law, and are now wanting to hire the best guy for the job, familiar with these types of cases. We have found that guy, but he is not cheap.
We have raised half the money needed ($4500) and are looking to fundraise for the other half so Roman will have decent representation.
The link below is a way you, or anyone you know, who could donate, can donate directly to his cause. Any amount would be gratiously appreciate by us and Roman and his family.

The link is

Thank you so much in advance for your help and support!

Jeff and Jennifer Funicello

Ok to the above, he stated that, try reading next time.

J, get this out to the media, local polish people, and better sources then the shroomery. No offense to the shroomery, but the shroomery wont do anything for this guy.

You need to start a legal defense fund. But most importantly get some other visible poles to group around him. Get him some support.

Somehow this kind of seems like someone scamming for money.

If it's legit, get the word out to a more relevent audience.

I'm looking for ideas here, more than physical help, I know you guys aren't about to do anything but there's some pretty smart people around here who might have some good ideas for me.

This isn't something being kept quiet, this is an international political prisoner issue.

I know this man personally and this is in no way not serious or a scam for money or whatever any other douchebag wants to think. I want ideas because we're already doing everything we can locally.

Article Text:

Roman Wroclawski was an illegal immigrant at a time when we didn't label all such people as criminals. Sometimes, as was the case with Wroclawski, we actually thought of them as heroes.

It's hard to believe that was only nine years ago.

But, back in 1998, the Phoenix news media did several stories on Wroclawski, all of them sympathetic. He is from Poland. In 1982, he won a world championship in Greco-Roman wrestling. He was honored by his home country and received a special audience with then-Pope John Paul II. It was Wroclawski's first exposure to the world outside of the Communist bloc, and it led to him writing a book that criticized how Eastern European countries treated their world-class athletes.

Wroclawski, who had traveled to the United States on a temporary visa, was charged with treason in Poland. After his visa expired, he decided to stay here. When I first met him, he was about to be deported.

Wroclawski and his attorney at the time, Marshall Whitehead, were fighting his extradition. Eventually, they succeeded in convincing a court that Wroclawski was the victim of political persecution. He was granted permanent residency status.

Not long after that, he helped to coach the American wrestler Rulon Gardner, who stunned the world in the 2000 Sydney Olympics by defeating a Russian heavyweight who hadn't lost in 13 years.

"It is like a dream," Wroclawski told me following Gardner's victory at the Olympics. "When Rulon wins, I touch my nose to make sure I am not dreaming. It was beautiful. I am so proud. So honored to be a part of this for America."

Since then, Wroclawski and his family have settled in. He worked as a limousine driver and continued to coach wrestlers. At least he did until recently, when he was hauled off to prison.

Polish officials have petitioned to have Wroclawski extradited on a charge from the early 1990s that he defrauded a company that he owned. Wroclawski spoke about the allegation years ago, contending that it was tied to the trouble he had gotten into over his book.

His current lawyer is immigration specialist Alex Navidad.

"This makes no sense to me," Navidad said. "It was so long ago."

Navidad first will try to get Wroclawski freed on bail and then try to block his extradition.

"Unlike a traditional criminal process, where a defendant has a presumption of bail, in extradition cases there is a presumption against bail," Navidad said. "The only way a person can be released is at the discretion of the district judge where there are special circumstances. That's what I'll be arguing."

The extradition fight will be even tougher.

"A lot of leeway is given to the requesting country," Navidad said.

"We think that this is a politically motivated request. It appears from what I've learned that it is about his book and his reputation. The things he said about high-ranking officials. From my reading of the treaty, if a request is politically based, I think that a judge can deny it. That will be our argument."

I haven't spoken to Wroclawski, but his attorney says that he is optimistic and in good spirits.

Navidad will argue that the statute of limitations has expired. He'll point out that Wroclawski has never been in trouble in the United States and that he is a hard-working family man.

"I don't know if we'll win," he told me, "but this is a good person. He loves and respects this country. That's what immigration is all about. That used to mean something."

But that was a long, long time ago. Nine years.

I did read, why would I ask a question without reading? I've never heard of the charge 'writing a book about your country.' Try thinking more next time and not assume everyone is an idiot. He's being charged with treason as stated in the last post.
