Graft Stocks
    #8195682 - 03/26/08 08:34 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

If your going to be using a nice sized cacti as a scion, and you plan to put it on a bigger cacti (say its past pereskiopsis stage). Does the actual type of cactus under it effect the growth.

Say -- Putting a scion on bridgesii vs one on a pedro.

From your personal experiences, what do you see/do that gets the maximum growth for your scions? Size of the stock, type of stock, cut the stalk lower/higher to the roots. Just different things you do/see that you think from your experience has made your scions gets the most out of thier stocks.

some things to look out for.

graft connection matters
fatter stock=better faster growth (pay attention to the base of the stock, as seed grown cacti are often skinny at the base)
stock specie plays a HUGE role!
your environment aslo plays a huge role
taller stocks put more energy into offsetting...so use shorter stocks or cut out all the stocks areoles.

those are the main things i keep in mind when grafting.

pedro is great rootstock. i think bridgesii could be great if you are in a dry climate. they tend to get black rot if in high humidity, which would not be good for rootstockage.

but pedros are one of the best.
