need another id please
    #820160 - 08/16/02 11:21 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

this one was found aparently growing out of lawn grass, the cap and stem and all are pretty much exact same color, gills are purple-grey, stem seems semi-hollow(feels solid to the touch but is semi hollow(see pic)), spore print is same color as the gills in the pic

By elimination I would say it's a Stropharia. It somewhat resembles Stropharia hornemanii. Were there pine trees nearby (within 10 or 20 feet)?

Happy mushrooming!

no pine trees, and under further inpection, while the spores appear purple on paper, they look brown under a microscope(a cheap one so who knows)

The spore color should be described as the color of the spores in aggregate - that is, what they look like to the naked eye when there are lots of them together, as in a spore print. The appearance of individual spores under a microscope may be somewhat different. By the way, if you have them under a microscope, what do they look like (smooth, rough, elliptical, round)? How big are they (approximately)?

The pine trees question was referring to a possible ID of Stropharia hornemanii. If there were none, then it almost certainly isn't.

The overall appearance of the photo (ignoring colors) is of an Agaricus. If it is, the spore print should be colored pretty much like dark chocolate, and not distinctly purple.

i dont know what shape or n e thing they were, as i said it was a cheap microscope, i had them all in a cluster but flatened, had bad lighting for microscope, but i did have a gill section on there and the gill appeared brown when on the microscope

i also have a really dark print on some foil of it, and that appears distinctly purple

As a tip for microscope usage, to examine the spores it is best to use spores from the spore print. Just use a needle or toothpick to pick up a small amount of the powder, put it on a slide, add a drop of water, put on a coverslip, and examine. If a spore print is not available, use a forceps to take a small piece of gill (about 3mm square) near the stem, place it on the slide, add the drop of water, put on a coverslip, then use a pencil (eraser end) to crush the bit of gill (you can press pretty hard), and examine.

Definitely a puzzling mushroom. Your description still suggests a Stropharia, but none of my references have a species which agrees with your specimen.

Let's try a couple more questions. When it was fresh, was the cap surface dry, moist, sticky, slimy? Is there wood debris or manure in the lawn you found it in? Did any parts of the mushroom bruise a color when you cut it? Is there any particular smell to it?

it had been raining for about 4-5 days, then it popped up, it was slightly moist/dry, i dont know if there where wood chips or manure, although i had tossed a piece of dung about 5-6-7 feet from where it grew(but i see no way of that being a factor as it seeming to come straight from the soil), there is no bluing, or bruising, it had very little smell but was slightly mushroomy(standard smell)

There is a rare species, Stropharia kaufmanii, which is mostly similar to your specimen. The biggest problem is that S. kaufmanii has a scaly stem below the ring, and your photos seem to show that the stem is smooth. It could occur in heavily fertilized grass and otherwise resembles your description. Is it possible that the stem was minutely scaly (the description is "with fibrillose erect or recurved scales, especially below the ring") and that the photos don't show it? I should also mention that, as far as I can tell, S. kaufmanii has only been found in the Pacific northwest. What part of the country are you in?
