uncompatible DVD drive?

This is probably a stupid question.
I just bought a bran new Dell desktop computer.
I tried to take my old DVD burner and install it in the new computer. However, I don't see any ribbon to connect the DVD- drive in my new computer (I believe its an IDE cable, very wide and flat).
I assume there is a new connectivity standard and I need to get a new drive? Or am I completely missing something.
thanks in advance

Maybe your new Dell uses SATA? Does its bracket have a small (~1cm) straight line with a little hook at the end? Or is it long and thin with a bunch of pins/holes?
The old ribbon, known as IDE is the most common. Now they have new ones that are SATA, which is less common.

I think thats it.
This sucks. Buying a new DVD burner is one thing, but the my old hard drive is IDE.
Any ideas on how I can connect the old (IDE) HD to my new HD (SATA) for a transfer.

You can get all sorts of adapters off of ebay real cheap. I use one to turn my IDE harddisk into SATA compatible so I can plug it into the new SATA format.
Also, there are adapters that turn your motherboard's old IDE into an SATA.
Maybe something like this? http://cgi.ebay.com/2-In-1-IDE-to-SATA-or-SATA-to-IDE-Bidirectional-Adapter_W0QQitemZ190209014455QQihZ009QQcategoryZ167QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Make sure it will physically fit of course, it looks like it sticks out a few inches.

Are you saying that your new computer does not have a free ide cable, or no slot to plug the ide cable in? Still 99% of dvd/cd drives are ide, so it probably does, but it's possible it doesn't, specially with dell I suppose. I believe you can get an ide - sata converter.

There's not even an IDE slot to plug something into.
I've hooked up numerous DVD/CD drives and HD's. Thats why I was so surprised. I guess I haven't been keeping up with the times. Thanks for the tips, I'll pick up an adapter.
EDIT: Is there any advantage at all in converting to SATA? is it better at anything?

I don't think so, speed wise your limited by the drive, not the bus.

Better cable management and it has plug and play. Its also nice to have a high bus speed so that driver manufacturers have room to increase their speeds as time goes on.

One last question: Will that adapter allow me to convert the power source as well?
I looked again and even the power cables look different. This is quite irritating.

Honestly, I would just get a SATA ready drive and be done with it. Once you count the expense of an adapter for your existing drive, and factor in the chance of failure due to age or the drive itself, you aren't really saving that much. You might even find a sucker willing to give you a few bucks for your old drive.
