Lower RH yet more FAE
    #8193115 - 03/25/08 07:01 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Ok so I have a FC that has been consistently showing 99% RH (digital gauge only goes to 99%) using perlite. I used the tek where you put holes in all 6 sides of the FC to help FAE and had it sitting in a place where there wasnt exceptional air flow and it was holding 99% RH no problem. Now I have a fan blowing on some mushrooms for drying which is in the same general area of my FC. Now that I have the fan close to the chamber the humidity is hanging around 95% RH give or take a few %. Correct me if Im wrong but Im assuming this is because of the extra FAE going through the FC. My question is this drop in RH going to change how well my mushrooms grow? Im guessing since cakes are supposed to be in the 95-100% range, 95% is perfectly fine, but my question is 100% better? If 100% does in fact make a difference is it worth to keep it at 95% because of the added FAE?

TIA

Stewart

You should be fine with 95%.

those small square walmart gauges, i think theyre called precision thermo or something... theyll show 99% even if the rh is 70%. Theyre not accurate in the confines of a small box ie FC. In my experience anyway.

Invest in a quality hygrometer.

How do u know the quality of my hygrometer? Besides that has nothing to do with my question. To restate it in shorter form: Does 95% RH versus 100% make a difference in growth performance of cakes? If so does the extra FAE that is causing the loss in 5% RH make up for this difference? ie keep fan where it is, or move it?
