hello I have a customers HP computer that I tried to do a xp repair on and whenever I get to the enter key screen it won't except the key I give it. the key says HP on it so I think that it needs the original install disk that came with the computer. in which case I'm fucked because like all idiot computer owners they through away the disk, and they want it back today. But since I have started the repair ritual I don't know how to make start windows up again and have never been able to. Does anyone know of any tricks? thanks in advance

a lot of times you can d/l a copy of the oem install discs...I did it for a dell, and have now used it on 2 different dells, using the key on the sticker on the computer, and it has worked fine.

Get yourself a copy of windows xp corporate, no bugging screen for windows genuine (dis)advantage. Just make sure you deselect it when doing automatic updates or it'll download and install automatically.
I turn off automatic updates. I don't mind it popping up saying updates are available, but I'm not wasting my bandwidth on crap.

Either that or ever hear of torrents?
Microsoft doesn't touch keys that have HP, Dell, Emachines, or any other crappy brands that I didn't mention. I've called and argued for an hour with the Indians about this. And I would NEVER use a torrent copy of XP for a client's computer, you don't know who did what with it, loaded it with trojans or had backdoors installed in it and could be a waste of time and money in the long run.

I have plenty of legit copies laying around and used one to do the repair for this computer, its that the key I had on the box didn't work for some odd reason. I ended up using the repair partition on the drive to reinstall the os. When it started up, it said the the key from the recovery wasn't valid?! WTF? thats what came from the factory, but it was different from what was on the box so clicked change product key, typed in the one on the box and all was well. Have no idea what was going on, I think that when I did the repair, it was looking for the key that was already in the os which was different from the one on the box, thats why it wouldn't work.

installing legit windows is a lot more hassle and annoying that the streamlined XP copies one can find around the internets

You cant install illegal copies onto customers computers, I'm against MS's bullshit about how you can't install a legit copy on more than one computer you own but I won't install an illegal copy on a customers computer they're more than welcome to, but I haven't been able to find a cracker that didn't work yet.
