Cardio and Stamina
    #8177888 - 03/21/08 10:12 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Got a few questions to ask.

First of all I stopped smoking MJ and decided I wanna start doing Cardio.

So far on the treadmill I can run from 5 - 10 minutes depending on my days and after that Im done for.

Im wondering if theres any way to increase my stamina from 5 - 10 minutes to say 15 or 20 minutes? Is it just as simple as running for that 5 to 10 minutes for a couple weeks once a day and then maybe id be able to run for an extra 5 minutes or so, or is there something Ive gotta do besides that?

What else is good for cardio training aside from the treadmills.

Theres the Elliptical trainers and the bikes but Im just getting into this sorta thing and would like to know how many minutes of each to do and one after another and so on.

So if anyone can help out id be happy

Bro, just go at it as hard as you can for as long as you can. You gotta keep pushing the envelope if you want to grow. And ya gotta make it at least 30 minutes with 20 being in your target zone for it to really make a difference. If you're not there yet, just try to increase the time by a minute or two a day, and you'll get there. I personally love the elliptical, but that's personal preference.

Good luck.

Start slow, and push yourself a little harder each day. When I started running to get in shape for bball tryouts, I did an extra 1/2 mile every week and built it up gradually over the course of a few months. Personally, I love treadmills, but they're not the most balanced way to work out.

Also, strength training is your friend.

mayfly's advice plus i would recommend learning good stretching technique. somatic flexibility is definitely going to increase your cardiovascular stamina and decrease any chance of injury. Focus on your quads, hamstrings, and calves and flex the body overall. Warm up nicely before you run but do some good stretches especially AFTER running. It's one of the best things you can do for yourself post-workout.

I agree that starting slow is the best idea. I think you'll get a lot more out of a run if you pace yourself rather than go at it full speed until you crash. Personally, I began jogging again about a month ago - I go three or four days a week, after a short home-gym workout and before a short free weight session. I started out jogging one lap around the park near my house, then walking one lap as I panted and wheezed, then jog a lap, walk a lap - repeat until I was exhausted. The next week I would jog two or three laps, walk half a lap, etc until now I'm jogging upwards of eight consecutive laps and hardly breaking a sweat.

Stick to your schedule and in no time you'll feel absolutely incredible after a good work-out - way better than getting stoned and playing video games

if you want to really push yourself do this interval training with no rest in between

run 1 minute

immediately do as many pushups as you can

immediately go back to running for 1 minute

as many squats as you can

run for a minute

crunches

run

leg raises

run

add on more if you can

it will blast you
