There's a really good way that we've found to stop excessive behaviors of any type - barking, licking, jumping, etc. We teach a command for the behavior, and then a "thank you" command for when we've had enough. We say "kisses" when we want a kiss, "paws up" when we want them to jump and give us a hug, and "speak" for them to bark....and "thank you" when we want them to cease the behavior. Works like a charm! Labs will do anything for food, and Molly, our tri colored dog, will do anything for a friggin tennis ball, so they've been easy to train

I always like checking out your pet pics, Liz. Always a good thread to look at and it always makes me smile. I couldn't deal with that many animals, but I could if I had some land, or something like that. I live in the city with almost no yard and it's just not an ideal place for multiple animals. One of our neighbors has 4 dogs that I seriously want to kill, at times. The owner just lets the fuckers bark forever and do nothing. At like 4 in the morning, too! I have screamed a stream of serious cursing and promises of harm if the owner of the house didn't shut the dogs up. I usually start by screaming at the dogs, which only makes them bark more. I was tripping one night and went out there and screamed and I guess it sounded so primal that I didn't hear a peep out of them for the rest of the night.

I haaaaate it when people let their dogs just bark their asses off outside. But I also hate it when people get mad when our dogs bark like, twice, at lunch time. Lame. We had a neighbor complain at like 2pm one day when our dogs were outside for 5 minutes, heard her out in front of the house, and barked. We trained them to do that - bark when they hear someone near or on our property. But yeah - middle of the night is just obscene. We don't let our dogs outside after about 7pm or so without us out there with them, so if they bark, it's stopped immediately.

Wow, thats excellent idea.
But what is a "thank you" command. like you just say thank you and stop them? or.. you say thank you and reward them?

I stand up, say "Thank you" loudly, and then make a motion like the umpire makes when a runner steals 2nd base successfully - but I obviously use it to mean "stop". If they stop, I reward them. If they don't stop, I walk away and won't look at them until they calm down and do what I want them to do.

damn liz, you always end up with the cutest fucking dogs. The puppy looks similar to my friends white german shepard when she was a pup. I've wanted a dog for so long but deep down i know i don't have the proper time to devote to loving and taking care of a dog. My 4 kitties will just have to do until my life is a bit calmer.
Here's some pics of two of my cats, the smaller one is loki and the bigger one is fuzz.
