Kiwi My Cat Almost Died! Yikes!
    #8182896 - 03/23/08 10:19 AM (16 years, 9 days ago)

Thought the Pub's cat-people would find this interesting:

Kiwi had been down for a couple of days, then Friday night around midnight he couldn't even stand and he pooped himself laying down. I freaked! He's been with me for a long time and we're very close.

Diagnosing him was tricky. Possible diagnosis included cancer, brain tumor, even a neurological problem. They did an ultrasound (check out the pic below of his shaved belly), x-rays, hematology profile, and a long list of other tests. It turned out to be a paramecium infection (a microorganism kinda like a bacteria). They admitted him Friday night and he spent two days there.

The vet who treated him is a specialist. She went to school eight years to become a vet, then another four years to become a specialist in veterinary neurology and internal medicine.

By a lucky coincidence one of the best emergency veterinary hospitals in the nation is 20 minutes away from me, and I never knew this. The veterinary staff there is all-specialists. They only take emergencies and leave routine care to your ordinary vet.

The facility is amazing! They have ultrasound facilities, digital radiography, CAT scan (heh, pun), even an animal MRI machine. It's serves as a regional emergency referral hospital for veterinarians throughout Florida and the Keys.

Check out the virtual tour:

http://mvshospital.com/virtual_tour.htm

Unfortunately, along with the impressive facility, you get an impressive bill: $4,000! I don't mind though.

Here are some pics of Kiwi I shot while he was in the hospital. He's home now and still a little weak, but doing a lot better.

Is this an adorable face or what.

The IV in his hind leg.

Another shot of his IV.

This was today when I took him home. He was already feeling well enough to stand.

This is his bald belly where they shaved him to do the ultrasound.

This is how he usually asks for a belly rub. His bald belly feels like play-dough. I bet it's going to itch growing back hair.

Happy to see me.

I respect your efforts to save your kitty!  I almost lost one of my cats and I shelled out some $$ to save him...never regretted it at all, although I had a lot of silly non-pet lovers tell me they never would "spend that much on a cat."

Kiwi is ADORABLE and he has a very loving daddy!  :heartpump:

Lucky puss.

I love kitties...and yours is adorable.

You get 5 for caring so much bout your kitty.

In fact, I'd probably be more likely to save a cat then a human, because msot humans are fucking rotten assholes, and all kitties are adorable and will never leave your side.

The vets around here would've probably put your cat to sleep to remove him of his pain.

Good job, Diploid!

Adorable cat, too.

Yours behave about 1000X better at the vet than mine do.

Mine are not fond of the vet at all and getting them to sit still w/ that IV would have been a disaster.

What an adorable little guy!  Here's to hoping Kiwi a speedy recovery!  I think it is great that you followed through with medical attention for your cat.  He is a lucky little fella.

It was $4,000. Emergency rooms are expensive and my Kiwi doesn't have health insurance. And that doesn't cover follow-up visits to the regular non-specialist vet in a few weeks.

He's on a hefty dose of two different antibiotics now. Unfortunately, he's not tolerating them and pukes a few minutes after I dose him (usually on my bed), which is three times a day for a month.

I'm waiting for a call back from the vet specialist to see if she can switch him to something else that won't make him puke.

/me crosses fingers

When I get a chance, I'm going to shoot some better pics of his shaved belly. He's chubby and the flabby belly looks like a woman's tit and feels like play-dough. It's really kinda funny. It's so much fun to play with, I can't stop myself from squeezing it. Kiwi's happy though. He loves all the attention.

I wonder if the antibiotics are even being taken up by his body if he is puking so fast.

That's my concern too. I'm sure some is getting in, but too-little antibiotics can make things worse by selecting for resistance in the bug you're trying to get rid of.

I'm sure your vet will have a suggestion.

So, what was the diagnosis? Or did they just charge you 4k to have a go at CAT, MRI and ultrasound, and give your cat some charcoal in the end because he had eaten some crap from the garbage bin?

How exactly is any Paramecia "kinda like bacteria"? And since when do they infect cats? Links to articles or I call shenanigans on the diagnosis.
