Putting movies on DVD-R

Someone gave me some DVD-R discs so I could put videos on for them to watch on their DVD player, and I've never done this before. These things are close to 5 gigs in space and I want to put about 3 on one disc I guess (since your average movie file is around 700MB more or less), what's the best way to do this? Any software I should know about?
It should be noted that I'm not ripping from a personal DVD I'm putting avi movies and such that I got from torrents).
Can it be done where the three movies can each be accessed separately with the remote from the DVD player? Or should I just do one movie per disc? I've got three discs.
Anyways any help or suggestions as to how I should go about doing this is appreciated. Thanks.

so long as the dvd player can play the files with the formats you are burning, there will be no problem. you can burn several videos to the same disc without issue. my dvd player will just list the files on the disc when it is inserted. it navigates folders just fine, too.
as far as what to use, nero comes to mind. select dvd-rom (iso), add your files and you are good to go.

Alright so I downloaded Nero 8 and went to "Data Burning", added the files to the list I wanted to pass over to the DVD......then it asks for a writeable disc. I put the blank dvd in the drive and it just pauses for a while, then spits it out and asks for another one.
wtf

I guess my computer doesn't support DVD-R or something....but it will take CD-R. Is this because of some kind of hardware I don't have or is it software related?

Does it say DVD-R on the outside of your disc drive?
Are you sure your DVD player can play .avi files?

Well if your DVD player cannot play avi, then all this is for naught eh?
Wally world sells cheap .avi players... that would be easier (but more expensive) than figuring out how to convert it then burn it.
Back to your burning problem, it doenst give you any error message at all? Not enough space on the disc maybe? Have you tried a different blank disc? (sometimes they are bad...)

No error messages with Nero, just spits it out and asks for a new one. Then I tried with the shitty program that comes stock on dell computers "Recordnow!" and that did give me an error message, then did the same thing.....spit it out and asked for a new one. Then I tried cd-r, the 700MB ones.....still didn't work.
These dvd-r discs are 4.7 gig and 120 minutes, I only want one movie on each and none of them are over 120 minutes so I don't know what's up.
I can burn music just fine to discs, too. Just not video for some reason.
oh well, whatever...

that is only a cd burner, not a dvd burner,
ROM = read only memory, in this case, it means DVD READ ONLY

I use Toast 8 for DVD's.
Not only can i fit three on the disk, but i can have a main menu, and it breaks each movie into chapters.
But i also use a mac.
