Yes, its called encryption and you need to into you user section of the router and turn on the wep security settings. be ready the write the key down and check it 3 times. when you try to go back online it will ask for the key the first time only. enter the wep key and your done. If its already protected its unlikely anyone is using it. If you give out your key though people will often share things like that with other people so never give it out.

Yeah, that should stop them!
(WEP is about as secure as a screen door.)

DO NOT USE WEP!!!!!!!
Seuss is right...WEP can be cracked easily.
WPA is essential now. Far better encryption scheme.
As for seeing people on your network...do you use a router? Most (all) routers I have seen have "wireless clients" list, or something like that. It will list all the wireless clients that have connected to your network and requested an IP.

thanks!
i think i have the newest router (the little box with the wires and the antenna and blinking lights) and it auto-installed itself (some tech guy helped me choose it). i also had the list available but i don't know where the hell i put it...
anyway my wifi sign has turned from regular green to white, saying "another wireless network utility is communicating with the wireless adapter".
microsofts wireless thingie doesn't work when my installed one does so i don't have a clue what it's doing.

I've always wondered why people use WEP....especially since WPA is way easier to use and connect to...

There are lots of internet connectable devices that only support WEP.
