Mirro pressure cooker leak
    #8169542 - 03/19/08 10:08 PM (16 years, 3 days ago)

So yeah, my PC took a crap and its not the gasket, the gasket is less than 2 months old, when i flip the lid around it continues to leak in the same place in reference to the lid wich COINCIDENTLY has the steam opperated saftey valve right there, The handle was super loose and im thinking this MIGHT be the problem but if its not im thinking about trying to bend the tabs on the cooker (not the lid) downward to seal tighter, the only problem is aluminum in my experience with this thickness tends to crack and break instead of bend.

either way this has a saftey valve with a rubber gasket around it that operates a lever that locks the handles under pressure, im thinking either this saftey is obstructed, the gasket to the saftey is bad allowing steam to travel THROUGH the handle, or i dunt know a great number of many shitty things.

Not like i care, the cooker was free, i just dumped a 12$ gasket in it and used it for awhile, never left my PC on high. I got a presto 6 quart as a backup but i can only do 4 jars at a time wich is totally lame...

I'm sure I don't have to really say this, but do you REALLY think that is a good idea, I mean that safety valve is there for a reason...

I really think you should invest in a new PC and stop using the damaged one STAT, as if anything happens you or someone else are likely to get shitted right up when that bitch decides to detonate.

Just sayin'.

well A: You people dont understand what the safety valve is or does, so way to make a bunch of assumptions

IT HAS A OVER PRESSURE BLOW OFF VALVE COMPLETELY SEPERATE, the saftey valve operates a lock that locks the handles so the cooker cannnot be opened when the PC is under pressure, thats ALL The valve does and frankly if your stupid enough to open a PC when its under pressure with the weight still on it and everything then you deserve to get blown up

I ran the thing today fine, and most the time im never around the cooker when its running becasue its sitting in the middle of the garage on a timer incase i forget about it, my cats that live out there could get screwed though but they ruin my parents shit anyways. But yeah today i started it up in the kitchen.

It has 2 valves, One that operates the handle locks, and one that is a red plug that pops up and lets pressure out when its overpressure. I basicly unassembled the handle with the saftey lock mechanism, removed the bar and HItemp siliconed the valve in the upwards (fully under pressure) condition.

It should be pretty safe but i appreciate all your concerns for my saftey regardless of how smug your posts may be.

Do you have a pic of where you glued it? I have an old Mirro like the one you're talking about. I stopped using it because of the same reason. I have an AA, but having a second PC to do really large batches would be nice.

Out of curiosity, what model is it? Do you have any idea what caused it? I ask because I have a new Mirro PC and I don't have the money to go buy another one any time soon.

Yes, get the hitemp silicone RTV From AUTOZONE or anywhere, its usually red but i have some clear stuff. I cant really even vouch if that will be nesscecary, at the most if the silicone went your PC would just leak steam out the handle and never reach pressure or hold pressure thus making the danger factor Moot.

DO NOT PULL THE RED PLUG OUT, it is the overpressure valve and the machining around the hole is horrible, it will rip the red valve to shreds then your PC will not work.

so here is the top of the PC, the saftey valve is located under the handle that has the mirro logo

Remove the screw that holds it on

Once the handle is removed you will see the bar that locks the handle in place under pressure, you will remove this bar and put the valve that actuates it to the "under pressure" condition wich is sticking up.

I reinforced the bottom to make sure the valve stays up.

and this will be what your left with, put the handle back on and get ready to rock some jars!

I think its halarious noobs with 25 and 45 posts are trying to be insightful, how cute. The other guy, just being a smug jerk.

What caused it was deterioration to the black rubber seal, black rubber deteriorates under contact with UV light and oils, so when i took this handle off i found a bunch of what appeared to be oil baked residue around the area, i suspect that caused my black seal to go bad

Model numbers on most mirro pressure cookers are embossed in the bottom

its a m-0598-11 (if you search for parts leav ethe -11 out)

8 quart.

Pixie, Honestly, this PC is about 18 years old and out of maintence, my car is about 18 years old and out of maintence, the emergecny brake in my car doesnt work and thats a saftey system, the Saftey latch for the handels now doesnt work for my PC... SO do you think im really going to stop driving my car becasue the E brake doesnt work??... No.

So obviously im not going to stop using my PC just becasue the Handle no longer locks and it has the possibility of BEING OPENED under pressure, The moral of the story is DONT OPEN IT UNDER PRESSURE JESUS CHRIST PEOPLE!!!

it has wieght on top!!! REMOVE THAT

LET IT PROPERLY COOL FOR AN HOUR

YOU WILL BE FINE

WTF!

AND REMBER, DO NOT OPEN IT (BECASUE NOW IF YOUR AN IDIOT YOU CAN) UNTIL ITS FULLY UNPRESSURIZED.

I need to for real, but it has to be me, like how i word things or something, everyone no matter what i post SOMEHOW manages to not understand what im saying. I would like to think that i dont need to spell everything out to every detail everytime i post but aparently its the only way to avoid any and all confusion, people just make assumptions otherwise.

i have that same type of pc except bigger. the problem with mine is that that valve never goes down once its been pressurized and i have to stick a knife under the handle and push on that valve to get it to realease so i can take the lid off. i might try your suggestion though.

IF your responsible enough to not remove the lid under pressure then i dont see why you shouldnt remove that metal tab that locks the handles.

Well, aren't you the internet tough ass postcount+++++++ makes me more intelligent then you NEWBS, I mean hell, I was just thinking about your personal safety, but I guess since you got sand in your neither regions and lashed out against those who were just trying to help and contribute (and then being even more of a petty BITCH and doling out some low ratings) then I am more then happy to put you in your place.

Your attitude sucks, and regardless of what you say, or how well you did (or think you did) your "rigging", it still shows that you have a complete lack of common sense (or you're cheap) in regards to property / bodily safety when operating a device that gets HOT and is under a lot of PRESSURE that could explode given the right set of circumstances. I'd love to see what the manufacturer would say about a rig job like that...

I mean you said it yourself...

Quote:

So obviously im not going to stop using my PC just becasue the Handle no longer locks and it has the possibility of BEING OPENED under pressure...

...after your "repair" the lids safety lock is INOPERATIVE, now what happens when a cat, other person, or you happens to put the cooker into a state of failure by accident which causes a serious incident and someone gets hurt really badly? Oh, but I guess you didn't think about that, I mean hey why should you I mean you're a trained, professional with a bigger postcount then myself.

But by ALL MEANS, please do go on, and if/when the time ever comes that you or someone else gets jacked up because your ass was too damn cheap to go buy a working, SAFE, non rigged pressure cooker, I want to see pics!

Now how's that for smug.

Also, thanks for the rating, been waiting around to get on the "board"!
