1. Registration deadline and organizational advices

The World Psychedelic Forum begins in 10 days. Our preparations are up to speed. Only few marginal changes of the publicized program have to be informed about. Please take notice of the following advices and notes:

1. No registration and payment is possible after receiving this newsletter. But there are still enough permanent tickets and enough tickets for all 3 days available. Just come to Basel and go directly to the registration desk at the Congress Center, during the following opening hours.

2. Payments on site in cash only (no credit cards, no checks), in Swiss Francs and Euro only.

3. At the Bookshop cash only, and in Swiss Francs and Euro only.

4. Should you have ordered a Headphone/Receiver, please remember that the deposit is 100.00 Swiss Francs, cash only.

5. Please note that over Easter all banks in town are closed. You may change money at the airports and at the railway stations.

6. At the request of Albert Hofmann, he will participate during the “Panorama” session on Friday afternoon, instead of the one in the morning.

2. External Events

Also for night owls Basel a variety of events during the World Psychedelic Forum are being offered.

Under the title “Psychedelic Nights,“ Hotzenplotz & Underground Sound Productions will present various nocturnal events, parties, and concerts, announced on their separate and permanently update website.

Jamming at the Edge of Magic

AoxoToxoA is the only Grateful Dead coverband of Switzerland, founded in 2002. They mostly interpret their sixties psychedelic-blues music as well as the country, rock'n'roll and ballade-caracterized seventies songs. Friday night at the Cargo Bar.

Un|Real

is a festival for electronic music inspired by altered states of mind. It comprises styles such as electro, minimal, psytrance and goa. Opposed to anything conventional and ordinary, pleasure and ecstasy, love and devotion, life and death are explored and examined by music, and time becomes physically perceptible. The music of this festival provides the soundtrack for the film in our mind. The vacuum of everyday life is filled up with hypnotic beauty by means of spherical tones, driving beats and transcendent rhythms. This is the music for altered states of mind. Saturday night at the Skuba Basement, University of Basel.

The Psychedelic Experience: Can You Pass the Bardo Test

is an external closing ceremony from Sunday to Monday. The book The Psychedelic Experience, by Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert und Ralph Metzner, is based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, describing the experiences of the consciousness after death, during the interval between death and rebirth, known as Bardo. It is possible to induce the Bardo state deliberately and intentionally with psychedelic substances.

The ceremony aims to give an understanding of the psychedelic experience following the Bardo concept with a "Audio-Visual Trip Guide", projecting relevant text passages of the Tibetan manual, combined with animations of sacred geometry and carefully selected musical performances. Sunday night at Das Schiff, on the bank of the Rhine in Basel.

Psychonauts

is the title of group exhibition in the gallery at the Museum HR Giger, Chateau St. Germain, from 8th March to 26th October. On Monday, 24th March, 5 pm, Claudia Müller Ebeling will guide you through the exhibition and the museum. A transport will be organized from Basel near the Congress Center to the Museum and back to Basel.

Here you find a survey on all external events.

3. Day Topic Sunday:

Consciousness Change as a Challenge of the 21st Century

Music is a way to expand into the core of being and to connect with it. By chanting, making music, and by listening we become "reconnected", the original meaning of "religio", to the essential. Jürg fuyûzui Zurmühle, master of the japanese bamboo flute Shakuhachi, will tune us into the final day with the sound and the music of the Zen flute, into a meditative state of Hearing the Moment: Silence, Breath, Sound.

Along with top-class experts we will then take a promising look ahead discussing what role psychedelics might play in the future for a fast and lasting change of consciousness, what relevance the results from psychedelic research might have for a new paradigm, and how we can promote such research in an expedient way. Furthermore we fathom about what a helpful contact with psychedelics might look in education and in politics, and we will shed light on the often cliff-hanging relationship between religion, spirituality and psychedelics, and the conditions under which they might inspire each other.

Psychology of the Future, and the Future of Psychedelics

“Lessons from Modern Consciousness Research,“ and their importance for a “Psychology of the Future“ is the content of the seminar by Stanislav Grof, no doubt the most famous pioneer of psychedelic research. “In the last five decades, psychedelic therapy and other avenues of modern consciousness research have revealed a rich array of "anomalous" experiences and observations that have undermined some of the most basic assumptions of modern psychiatry, psychology, and psychotherapy concerning consciousness and the human psyche in health and disease. Many of these observations are so radical that they question the basic philosophical assumptions of materialistic science.“ Stanislav Grof will review these remarkable data and explore the most important major revisions that would have to be made in our understanding of consciousness, of the human psyche, and of the nature of reality to respond to these conceptual challenges.

“A View from Evolutionary Psychology,“ will be the issue of Michael J. Winkelman’s contribution “Psychedelics and Human Evolution.“ The role of psychedelics in human evolution is evidenced in: homologies of psychedelics with a key neuromodulatory system, serotonin; human-ape differences in psychedelic self-administration and neurotransmitter systems; presence of psychedelic mushrooms in hunter-gather lifeways; the central role of shamanism in the emergence of modern human cognition; and neurotheological linkages of shamanic and psychedelics cosmology. Functional analysis of serotonin systems indicates adaptive effects related to selection for enhanced information integration and psychosocial modulation.

During the seminar “The Future of Psychedelics,“ Daniel Pinchbeck, will explore what we know about psychedelics today, surveying perspectives from indigenous shamanic traditions and from modern scientific research. The famous consciousness explorer will discuss the evolution of modern religious movements using visionary plant sacraments such as the Santo Daime in Brazil. He will offer some tentative theories on the nature of the visionary and ontological experiences encountered during the non-ordinary states induced by psychedelics. He will then discuss the possibility of integrating psychedelic study and use into a new paradigm for the future.

Educational psychologist Thomas B. Roberts is committed to the “Potential Benefits of Psychedelics for Humanity,“ and will introduce us to the “multistate theory, considering multistate implications for entheogenic religious studies and considering whether we are moving from our current word-based, text-based religious era to a religious era of direct experience of the divine."

During his investigations about the modes of action of a creative intelligence in the course of the evolution of life, it became clear to the German consciousness researcher and author Bruno Martin, that all life is based on the concept of mutual maintenance and support. He presents his findings in his talk “Creative Future: The Cosmic Triggers of the Evolution of Consciousness,“ and explains that life in all its variety could only unfold through co/evolution of plants and animals. A further, meaningful step was the coevolution of psychoactive mushrooms and plants with human evolution of consciousness. Creative intelligence has thus managed to have assistants with the emergence of conscious humans during the further conscious evolution of the noosphere – the consciousness field of the earth – and of humanity.

Eduaction and Politics

In a culture where psychedelics are demonized, mind-altering substances are not a welcome topic of conversation in many homes. Knowing the perils and promise of entheogens, many of parents face the question of whether to broach the subject with our children at all and if so, how. In their seminar “Psychedelic Families: What Do We Tell the Children?,“ Allyson and Alex Grey will share from their own experience and site reports from MAPS, Erowid, Entheogen Review, Drug Policy Alliance, and include both U.S. and European source material. The Grey‘s will lead a discussion where participants will be invited to air diverse points of view.

In the course of a “Panorama“ session, Alex Grey will present “Creative Practices,“ which support to turn “Visions into Art.“

Moderated by Lucius Werthmüller a round of noted Swiss and international experts from various professional careers, will discuss measures and steps “Towards a Rational and Timely Drug Policy.“ Law expert Jan Christoph Bublitz, lawyer and long-time rights activist for a rational policy regarding psychoactive substances, Pierre Joset, former Delegate for Drug Issues of the City of Basel, Member of the Swiss Commission for Drug Issues, Thomas Kessler, and Zen priest Vanja Palmers. This panel will define the outlines for the use of psychedelics beyond the regularized medical and therapeutic applications, presenting suggestions, to acknowledge psychedelics and cannabis as remedies, and finally discussing ways for a comprehensive decriminalization and legalization of psychoactive substances world wide.

Research

A promising look into future psychedelic research will be the MAPS seminar “From Problem Child to Wonder Child: The Next 20 Years“. Rick Doblin lectures about “Teaching Psychedelic Psychotherapy,“ and the designing of Training Protocols and Continuing Medical Education Courses. Russian researcher Evgeny Krupitsky will give an introduction to “Ketamine-assisted Psychedelic Psychotherapy of Heroin Dependance,“ and Valerie Mojeiko presents “Psychedelic Emergency Services: Harm Reduction in Action.”

The open discussion and exchange panel “Advancing Psychedelic Research,“ will be moderated by Thomas B. Roberts and will consider topics and methods current psychedelic research should take. Established researchers, rising researches, and all interested visitors are welcome to contribute their ideas. Small groups may focus on specialized topics and techniques.

Religion and Spirituality

Pychedelic research pioneer Ralph Metzner is convinced that the preservation and celebration of the diversity of living forms and the diversity of cultural traditions are essential to a sustainable civilization. We are all multiple personalities, each of us containing a "theater of simultaneous possibilities". We can recognize, celebrate and communicate with, the indwelling spiritual intelligences of all inorganic and organic lifeforms, as well as of Earth and other planets, Sun and other stars, Milky Way and other galaxies, and the Universe. In his lecture, Ralph Metzner will explain his view of our way to “Entheogenesis: Toward an Expanded Worldview for Our Time.“

Love is the basic energy of the universe. She shows herself in various forms: As Eros, our vital biological and cultural mainspring; as You-Love, the social basic module of the entire human evolution; as undirected, eternal spiritual energy from the source of all things, but also as the trigger of our desires, fears, conflicts, longings, and projections. The energy of love is a state of being. Love touches the core of the concern, love unites, love resolves, love heals, love is creation. Time Therapy, founded by Manuel Schoch, assumes that it is not important "that you are loved, or have been loved, it is just essential, that you yourself love. This love frees you." In his seminar “All You Need is Love – Without Love there is Nothing,” the modern mystic will present possible ways toward love, and how we can live it in our every-day life.

After many years as both a Zen student and a practitioner of sacred medicines, Dale Pendell should have some definitive answers. He doesn't, but he does have a few ideas. Zen is concerned with "the great matter." Using an alchemical metaphor, and a pun in colloquial English, could the "Great Matter" be called the "Great Stone"? Does nirvana have a neuropharmacology? In his talk “Psychedelics and Zen Buddhism: The Search for a Path,“ Dale Pendell will explore the most common misunderstandings on these points.

The birth of every religion is the mystical experience of its founder. Aside from historical information, such a statement primarily demands that we take a closer look at the phenomenon of the mystical experience itself. In a poll by the Buddhist magazine Tricycle a couple of years ago, over 40% of the respondents declared that their interest in Buddhism was activated by experiences with psychedelics. However, their use is regarded as incompatible with religious modes of practice by most exponents of established religions.

Zen-priest and animal welfare activist Vanja Palmers has fewer reservations. He stands behind the fact that LSD was the catalysator to open his mind for the spiritual dimensions, and he regards psychedelics as helpful tools in the process of consciousness expanding. In his presentation “Mystical Experiences, Psychedelics, and Religion,“ he focuses on the significance of the mystical experience and discusses, how religions can help us, to integrate them into our lives.

Closing Ceremony

After three days of obtaining an abundance of suggestions and information on all aspects of psychedelics, and having discussed insights and outlooks in connection with these highly potent substances, we will all gather for the closing ceremony. Noted speakers with musical framework will draw balance on the inevitable change of consciousness for our lives and our future existence as a response to the constantly pressing challenges of the 21st century – with our hope and our desire for a better world.

Sounds like the seed for the next stoner movie.

"If only I could make and sell enough drugs to get to the World Psychedelics Forum in Switzerland..."

Half Baked 2, Totally Fried.
Similar, but with LSD, or shrooms, something.
