Sterilization using UV light?
    #816199 - 08/13/02 08:14 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

"Ultraviolet sterilization works by dissociating the DNA structure of living cells thus preventing their multiplication. To destroy molecular chains requires a UV dose dependent on the organism type and at the germicidal wavelength of 253.7 nm. UV light between 200 and 280 nm is called shortwave UV light, or more commonly UVC, and has germicidal properties." - http://www.uvsystems.co.uk/Products/General/benefits.html

Has anyone tried sterlizing their substrates with UV light in the ~254nm range for a few minutes? You can buy UV diodes in many ranges, and cheaply (under $10/LED).

My only concern would be, do you think, the UV light would also degenerate the nutrient properties of the substrate's organic cells (be they rice, rye, etc.)

Food for thought. Pretty impractical though

Your concern should be that the UV doesn?t penetrate the substrate. If at all, you would only sterilize the surface.....

You would have to lay the substrate completely out flat, of course. Perhaps put it in some tumble device.

still, the light wouldn?t come in the inside of the individual substrate particles, no matter how thin you make the layer....

For surfaces or for your working area, it is a good idea so long as you remember to TURN IT OFF when you are there.. the last thing you need is skin cancer or to go blind.
I have never seen UV diodes of sufficient power to steralize, all the UV lamps I have seen were flourescent tube based.
