Fine tuning my tub (ps please answer heat queastion too)
    #8127659 - 03/10/08 02:20 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Once again calling on the experienced hear. I was going to have the bed of mono tub be 12inches. Then I was like fuck it go 14. Deeper substrate more food for mushrooms. Then I was like wait, more substrate more grain spawn needed (aiming for 2 cups for sq ft). Ok A one quart recipe makes about 3 some odd cups finished substrate should be able to handle that and then some (tub is 34inches long 15 wide and 20 high) but that only leaves me 4 inches of tub but at the same time I've seen pictures of fruits growing right out of ones growing chamber I guess this is acceptable? Anyone have some foresight one my little particular problem? I mean if I can keep enviromental conditions up to par having the fruits come right out of the tub then I'll go ahead and make substrate dept 16 have some 2inches of casing leave 2 inches free so I can seal the top during spawn run. I read in the the mushroom cultivator that heat generation can be a overwhelming during spawn running in deep beds of compost. I think this applies to straw as well but I dont think it would apply to little old mono tub. Anyone know?

Man, that sounds like a massive, as in way too large, amount of sub for one box.

you dont want to do any more than 6-8" sub max. The weight of the sub above will press too hard on the bottom sub making colonization more difficult. anything above 8" is pretty much wasting sub. I always go 4-6" and get monsters and by monsters I mean I have had some that weigh 300g wet.

My understanding is 4-5 inches is preferable.

Why do you go deeper azure?

I'm planning a monotub in the next month, info is appreciated.

I dont always go deeper. If you look I said that I go between 4-6" Deeper sub will get you bigger fruits to a point. You wont see that big a difference between 4-5-6" but. I have found that it provides for better subsequent flushes.

well I don't know what to think of this when the mushroom cultivator clearly recommends 12" substrate dept for P.C. There's no reason why the weight of anything would make it hard to colonize for it is recommended that you pack your substrate as dense as possible information also available in the mushroom cultivator.

Wait a sec you guys don't sound like you have any experience with deeper beds. If you read the book like I did you would know that it says substrate as deep as 3 feet are effectively utilized!

You guys are supposed to be teaching me... wheres RR at I bet he knows

RR will tell you like he has someone else in another thread that it may become anaerobic at deeper sub levels. I have read TMC many times and what you need to remember is that book covers many different varieties and their parameters. Look in the section that refers to P. Cubensis. You wont find it anywhere where it says that 3 ft subs have been utilized.

I'll give you the same advice I give all people: If you don't like the advice don't take it and succeed or fail on your own merits. Quit asking questions that you already has predisposed answers to. Quit asking questions you won't like the answers to.
