Have you greased your overpressure ring lately? How about even looked at it? Did you know that AA recommends that you replace the steam release plug yearly? Don't be so quick to blame the operator entirely, without considering the equipment.
That being said, know what you're doing. Getting wasted with a PC on the stove is a pretty bad idea. Good Luck to your friend Resptodd. That sucks in a bad way.
By the way, the lid handle on my AA broke before it's first use. That's a chintsy piece on an otherwise excellent tool. If it closes fine, and goes under pressure without obvious leaking, you should be good to go. Make sure you tighten it down in a star-like pattern.. like you would a tire.. and to use some vasoline on the lid to get a better seal.
