Ecoquest breeze AT

I've been using a Air purifier in my grow room for a while now and finally realized that maybe I should do a little research on it. I was originally just going to clean it out but now that I've done some reading I've realized that I'm probably just going to replace it.
The product description can be found here here and from what I can tell the whole company is pretty shady. Just look up Ecoquest and you'll find what I'm talking about.
Anyways I picked the damn thing up and it pretty damn heavy for it's size(about the size of a small speaker) so I decided to take it apart.
I have no technical knowledge on these things and my knowledge on air filters/purifiers goes about as far as knowing that a HEPA is a good one but I tried to think of what they were trying to do when they designed the thing. Here goes...

We'll start with the front. The picture is pretty blurry but it doesn't really matter. I'll explain most of it. The front panel has some buttons that control basic settings like fan speed and "air sanitation" which is what the product is supposedly known for. Instead of filtering it out of the air it actually sanitizes the air. I have no way of testing the air around me but from what i can tell this all sounds like complete BS

Next we have what is essentially the mother board. All of the different parts get their power from it and it controls the front panel buttons. Pretty simple.

Now for the actual filtration/sanitation parts

The thing on the left with the red in back and the metal circle in the front is beyond me. I can't come up with a use for this so if anyone has any good ideas I'm all ears.

The big metal cylinder on the side provides power for the two white pieces. From what I can tell it is where the majority of the weight is and I think it's simply a small transformer or something used to increase power output.

There are four wires coming off of it and they connect to metal paddles that are touching these white panels.

My guess on these is they are some kind of charged magnet used to "collect" the particles out of the air. I'm thinking this because the air passes right over them and it looks like the designer was trying to get as much power to them as they could. If I had a better picture you could see that the panel is relatively dirty but no where near as dirty as it should be for the amount of time I've had it running.

The only other method that this thing used to clean the air was a charcoal filter that went over the air intake. From what I've read the activated charcoal filters are only really good for removing some odors and hydrocarbons.

I guess my reason for posting this is that someone put a lot of work into something that doesn't even look that useful. I got mine at a garage sale for like 20 dollars so it isn't that big of a loss for me but these things retail for around 4-600 dollars. All that for a charcoal filter, fan and two white pieces that I will probably end up using as coasters. These are all my opinions and some of them maybe wrong. If you have any other ideas as to what some of this crap is used for let me know. I'm all ears.

As for what I'm going to use this for... I think I'm going to try and find a small HEPA filter to put over one side of the box and maybe try and figure out a way to use it as the case for a small room filter. We'll see how that goes.

And PS if you found the to be completely useless information about a crappy air purifier then yes it is. But I still found it interesting.

LOL! You are very lucky you didn't fry yourself poking around in there.

That's an ozone generator, not an air filter. Those white plates are charged with very high voltage when operating, which generates the ozone. The little cross/sight type deal is a RF antenna that (supposedly) generates negative ions.

The filtration capacity of this unit is basically zero. It works by generating highly reactive ozone which will kill many microbes and eliminate smells. Nothing works better than these units for getting rid of smells.

Remember though that ozone is very unhealthy for you at higher levels. It's not what you want to be using. When I use mine I crank it up and shut the door, then later unplug the unit and vent the room before spending any time in it.

~Yeah, I really dislike the ozone generators as far as health concerns go; some of that shit they sell on television, pretending as if eliminating odors is somehow cleaning your air...I work in a place that uses an ozone room and we are very careful not to let people go in their until it has been aired out for about an hour. Pure ozone can kill you, however I don't know the adverse health affects of a small increase of the stuff, say, in a large living room or something.

Again, like FastFred is saying, I am just emphasizing that there is a world of difference between covering up your stinky house smells with ozone and a proper air filtration device.

While we're talking about filtration...most of you probably use a cheap vacuum that has little or inadequate filtration, besides the actual vacuum bag.  The filtration of very fine particulate matter (I am talking about bacteria and other crap that is breathed in now) by the bag is greatly negated after only 10-20minutes of use.  I know a number of people in the industry (yeah, some cool friends right?  :drooling:) who change their vacuum bags every 15minutes, just for this reason.  The EPA recommends actually leaving your home for a few hours after vacuuming.  In a lot of states it is illegal for a business or restaurant to vacuum during open business hours.  :boring:

I know this is off topic, but just looking out for your health.  Thanks for reading the most boring post in the history of the forums. :sun: ~Pixie~

kinda crazy though. I'm not using it anymore and i guess my house will just become of a festering growth of mold spores and airborne bacteria until i get the HEPA haha. And as for shocking myself on the ozone generator... I was intelligent enough to unplug it before I started taking it apart.

One more question. Can any of this stuff be used for anything else. I mean come on you have to be able to use a negative ion emitting antenna somewhere right?

> Can any of this stuff be used for anything else.

It's great for eliminating smells. Those units produce a lot of ozone at full power, so you could certainly run it for several hours and then vent the place out. That should help kill a lot of bacteria, possibly even some molds, and your place will smell a lot better. Having a clean smelling place can help you track down new malodorous things that tend to crop up.

The units DO produce dangerous levels of ozone at full power. So if you're going to use it at anything more than a slightly detectable level you should leave and then vent the place before returning. Also works great for deodorizing cars and other small musty places.
