Casing vs Cakes?
    #8153402 - 03/16/08 01:42 PM (16 years, 9 months ago)

Im a newbie debating whether to grow shrooms through the summer and im planning and taking notes writing a tek guide out for myself so i understand better and i was wondering. Is casing better or simply using the cakes? (im planning on starting with 6 half pint cakes)

Casing is an extra lot of complication you don't need. Shroom growing takes a bit of getting used to, and you want to keep it fairly simple on the first run.

So, yeah, cakes. There's the whole 'higher bioefficiency than casings' thing too, apparently.

if you're new and just starting out id say start with cakes and once ya have that down move on to spawning your cakes to added nutrients like poo/coir/straw. it doesnt really make sense to just break up and case your cakes. you're just damaging the mycelium and making things more complicated than they need to be. but while your cakes are fruiting and what not check out how to spawn and then case stuff.

i have my first spawn and case going on atm and its looking real promising, tons of pins are forming and it looks to be well worth the effort. anywho good luck with the hobby man its definitely fulfilling, especially when done right.

i might challenge malkoth's claim that casing isn't worthwhile unless you're spawning to something like poo/coir/straw. but i don't want to argue about it and of course everyone is titled to his/her own opinion.

imho, i would do as simple a grow as possible your first, second, and even third times. go with your six 1/2 pint cakes. why? because you want success, not necessarily quantity or quality on your first attempt. six 1/2 pints *could* yield you an oz or more--now wouldn't that be awesome? keep things simple and build up your confidence and enthusiasm. once you've decided if the time commitment (because this hobby really does take a lot of time commitment) is for you, you can decide to move on to the more time consuming and difficult practices involved with casing, spawning, agar plates, liquid cultures, etc.

good luck!

well im a newb myself so i dont quite know the benefits of just straight up casing but i agree with you laughingbuddha in that keeping things as simple as possible your first few times and building on that is an excellent way to go
