Quick liquid culture question
    #8152523 - 03/16/08 07:35 AM (16 years, 9 months ago)

My buddy used a part honey part light corn syrup mixture with h20. He's wondering how necessary it is to filter our the debris that appears after pressure cooking? there seems to be some growth, maybe starting on the dark debris. is this ok, or not good. He would post pics, but its only been 2 days and it's hard to see.

thanks for your input.

It's normal for the sugars to caramelize some. Don't try to remove it because it doesn't matter and you'll contaminate it trying. If it is something else, then it's contaminated and you won't be able to use it.

leave it alone. you go sticking shit in there tryin to dig it out and it will contaminate.

The gunk on the bottom could be little metal shards from the injections port(rust to) so you dont have to worry about that stuff because you PC it and its sterilized. As long as you leave it alone from here on out you should be good

thanks for the replies. it seems to be doing well. it also seems that it uses that caramelized sugar/rust to start growing on.

Now here's the next kicker. This being his first time doing liquid culture and all, he forgot to add an agitator. So should he
a) leave it alone and carefully swirl the jar.
b) soak the agitator in alcohol, and insert it in a sterilized box.
c) pressure cook the agitator, then install in sterilized box?

again thanks for any help

an agitator is not essential. simply shake the jar to agitate, perhaps several times a day during the colonization phase.

you really don't want to be opening up your LC jar (or any other type of sterilized jar/container) after it has gone through the sterilization process, unless, that is, you absolutely must. for example, to do a grain-to-grain transfer you obviously have to open the jar after it has been sterilized. but in your case, what's done is done. you don't need an agitator.
