Will BRF cakes inoculate Straw properly?
    #814854 - 08/13/02 10:20 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Hey Hey Hey
My friend wants to use brown rice flour cakes to spawn / inoculate / whatever wheat straw via ShroomGod's Straw Bulk tek. Will this work? He uses rye in his tek, but I've heard that rice will work as well. My friend uses rice because he is most comfortable with this medium and he doesn't have a pressure cooker for the rye or other mediums. These rice cakes will properly inoculate pasteurized wheat straw, correct, or will this not work?
Thanks guys....

Yeah, it ought ot work. Birdseed or rye grain is just better because it breaks down into very small pieces and more evenly innoculates the straw.

i noticed for spawning brf if you leave rice a little chunky a little smaller than millet or same size. it breaks down into small pieces like millet. better than strait powdered rice.

It should work fine! As for the innoculation points problem, if you can throw the cake(s) in a food prosesser/blender for a few seconds. Only blend until you have nice small pieces, like described in Road's Horse Poo Tek desription.

using PF style cakes will definutly work. i use them as my prefered spawn for several species. i use a cheese grater to break/ shave the cakes into small pieces comparable to grain

That's actually a pretty good idea that I haven't seen mentioned yet. Thanks for sharing that with us.

I haven't heard that before either. If that is working well for you, I think I may try it.

this works well. the main advantage of using cake spawn is that one needn't graduate to whole grain spawn making in order to succeed.

also there is good control of contams with cake growing. i initially went with cake spawn out of desperation. i was trying to use birdseed, but didn't take into account how hard some types of birdseed are to sterilize, particularly those with sunflower seeds. anyway, i was having dificulty with any type of grain that was available to me at the time.

cake tek works great for wood lovers too. one simply substitutes aspen shavings or good mews kitty litter or other wood product for some of the vermiculite.
