can someone tell me about how long it would take one of these babies to colonize with a multi spore injection of an average colonizing cubensis strain?

tis a three pound pre-sterilized rye bag if you don't know.

I'd say under 3 weeks.
Inoculate and let it roll at room temp 69-73f or so until its about 20-30% colonized. Then massage the bag to distribute mycelium around the bag. Leave it at room temp and it may take just a bit longer, but if you are in a pinch for time you can flip a coin and set the room temp to about 80-81f and it'll be a little more hastey.
Keep in mind, people say higher temps invites contamination, I've been lucky so far, so like I say it's your coin flip.
I only have experince with eq, for me they colonize a quart in 17 days from multi-spore(room temp, inoc, wait til 30%, shake, set at 80F), your results may vary. just my $0.02

i thought the idea of these pre-sterilized bags was they make contamination virtually impossible as long as you flame the needle tip?
3 weeks isn't tong, afof ordered one of the bags and some spore syringes online and this will be his first grow. Would 3 lbs be a good amount for a mono-tub?

While the bag is colonized read up on spawning to bulk. Try looking for coco coir tek's, it's like $5 a brick at most petsmart stores and it'll expand to enough substrate to spawn to from your colonized bag. Or get some poo, even prepasteurized if ya want. Read up.

yeah my plan is to make trays and case half of them, and fruit the other half.

I wouldn't advise fruiting the rye without casing it and breaking up the bag and putting it in a container without casing is a waste of energy, both yours and the mycelium's. You'll get fewer flushes and probably not that great of a pinset, especially from multispore.
If you want easy you could just fruit invitro but I have never been fan. If you want to fruit directly from the rye just cut the bag off near the bottom of the substrate and put it in a fruiting chamber. By breaking it up you are making the myc use energy to grow back together. That energy can be put to use producing bigger fruits.
If you want the maximum yield, read up on bulk substrates and go with a monotub. You could also research straw logs, good yield and easy to make but not for the inexperience without a lot of reading.
If you want somewhere in between you can break all of that up into containers and case. That is probably the best middle ground for a first time grow.

It doesn't matter what type of casing method you use. I was just pointing out that NOT casing some of the pans will be a huge loss. I would have to say about 1/2 the yield as cased rye.
