Sick kitty
    #8130524 - 03/11/08 03:50 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

So I don't know it this is the place to post this, but here goes...
Three days ago I got a baby birman kitty, she's almost 4 months old.
When I got her home I fed her and gave her water and then she wouldn't eat for the entire day. I also noticed that she's too thin so I called the dude where I got her from to ask him how many times a day he was feeding her. His answer was once a day since she wasn't in the growth stage anymore. :what:
Anyways, at night she vomited a few times and the next day she still wouldn't eat and kept vomiting. So I decided to call the vet who gave her an antibiotic shot, but later on she got worse so I called the vet again to get her and take the proper care of her.
She's still there. they're giving her perfusion's and she still won't eat anything. Today it would be the forth day already... :frown:
So I've been wondering about what to do, I don't want her to suffer more than she already does, so maybe it might be better to just let he die.
Has anyone had similar experiences with their pets? What did you do?

i had a lizard like that once, turns out it was calcium deficient because I wasn't supplementing the crickets with dust. So he stopped eating and was so week they had to feed him with syringe, they sent me home with one to do it and i couldn't so he died.

I feel its our duty as pet owners to do everything we can to help them survive, Ive since understood that all beings have thoughts and feelings and the only difference between them and us is how we communicate. All the basic needs and wants they still have. I say this because I feel its wrong to "put" animals down. You give them everything you can and let nature take its course, not a $100 arsenic syringe from the doc.

Im not sure what perfusions are, but i would ask the doc's about a full range of vitimins, a lack of one could very well make someone not want to eat.

Also i have a strange hunch as to why your kitten isn't eating. From your post i gather that the kitten is small, maybe she/he still needs to be breastfeed? Even if the kitten is past that normal age, purhaps she hasn't been weaned...get a babys bottle?

I already tried feeding her milk from a baby's bottle and a syringe. Nothing.
Also, the first day that I brought her here, she ate kitten's food and she looked like she liked it.
I also believe that it's good to try to help our pets the best way possible, but I think that this includes letting them go if they're in too much pain. Otherwise it just becomes dumb selfishness.
If she wouldn't be given by the vet all the nutrition she needs, she would die anyways as she doesn't eat or drink water at all and she vomits all the time. :frown:
I think she must feel really bad and sick, so why prologue all this?

oh ok i musta missed some of that, well it could very well just be some stomac flu and in a few weeks it could be gone and your kitten good as new?

but again on the putting her down part, i know you love him/her, if it was a family member in a hospital in the same situation would a shot of death be the right thing to do?

and the way i look at it is with a needle its actually doing the killing, were as taking out a feeding tube or oxygen tube is like--you did what you could now its up to her. The needle is forcing the issue, the issue of life..something nobody should take from someone. Theirs people living with no legs and no arms, flu symptoms for a few weeks/months isn't all that bad.

I know and this is why I'm hesitating.
But if the vet would stop artificially feeding her, she would die of a long and tormenting death. This is something that I don't want her to go through.

well if it really is her time (and it may not be), then the result is just part of life and part of death.  Everyone has to go through it.  If she was out in the wild what kind of death would she prob have fell to?  Taking her in and having a friend to comfort/love her is more than enough

another thought, i keep thinking about why a cat would throw up food, one is some kind of flu as mentioned earlier, but perhaps its something like "lactose intolerant" but in cats?

try going to the market and buying a real fish or tuna, seems like cats go crazy over that stuff and something real/fresh/nature might just perk her appetite up and hold it down, heck maybe buy a live goldfish :yesnod:

yes please try fish, i just have a feeling that might very well work, playing with fish-eating fish must be the hardest thing for a cat not to do

I'll definitely try fish. :yesnod:
I wouldn't go for mouse though cause the kitty is so weak that it'll probably end up eating her.

yeah let us know how it goes, as a last resort maybe take her back to where you get her and see if she eats their, maybe just homesick, seeing other kittens eating might get her going to

Update:

The kitty has some form of gastritis. I just called the vet and he told me that he switched her to the right medication and that he thinks she has chances to get better in a few days, so I guess I'll just leave her there for one or two more days.

I really hope she'll get better, this all must be because she wasn't fed the way she should.

Aww, poor little baby! I've been so lucky in that my cat has never had any health problems (knock on wood.) It would be so hard to have to decide how long to hold on for.

Gastritis typically isn't caused by not being fed the way that they should be (in terms of frequency).  It's an inflammation of the digestive tract lining, and is typically caused by ingesting a foreign body or poison, eating spoiled food, OVER eating, or some types of medicines.  Some viral infections can cause it too.  It can also become chronic, and can be a sign of IBD.  In most cases, when kittens develop gastritis, it's because they ate something that they shouldn't have eaten, because they don't know better.  The only way to make it go away is to make the cat stop eating for a little while (but keep it hydrated with IV or Subcutaneous fluids) and then let it drink water, and THEN let it eat small amounts of bland food.  Antacids can also help, as can anti nausea medicine.  Good luck!!!

Yes, her situation just got worse up to the point where she's unable to move. She still vomits and doesn't eat anything. :frown:
I think the vet will just have to put her down.
Thank you for your reply.

My kitty was eating twice a day 6 months
dry kibble in the morning then wet canned food in the evening. Wet canned food is really good for cats, especially kittens. If the vet thinks its okay, try feeding her wet cat food. In the long run it'll be good for her anyway.

The problem is, she won't eat at all. She doesn't even drink water.
Right now she's being artificially fed, that's the only reason she's still alive.

I don't have much experience with cat's, and take my info with a grain of salt because I am no vet. I just grew up working with farm animals and I speak from my own experience.

When a calf, piglet, colt, or even a couple of our puppies get's sick due to malnutrition (including Gastritis ) we give them a 5cc shot of iron, and about 5cc's of NuFlor.

NuFlor is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic. Each milliliter (mL) of Nuflor 2.3% Concentrate Solution contains 23 mg florfenicol. With your kitten, you may only want to give 1 or 2 cc's.

The iron injection we give is Dextran, which is also used across the board for dogs, cats, horses, pigs, cows, etc.

With cat's you have to be careful how much iron is used to prevent a toxic iron buildup.

After working in a breeder barn dealing with over 2400 piglets daily, and using NuFlor and Dextran on our own pets when they get sick, I must say that this treatment combo really works. Within three day's we notice that any lame, splay, malnourished or sick animals really start to show sign's of recovery.

BUT please talk to your vet before doing any of this. I would not like to give out mis-information. Just because it works for us, and our vet give us the OK does not mean it will work for you.

I hope this helps though..
