Returning to growing after a long break

After 25 years away I want to start growing mushrooms again. Many things have changed and some interesting developments while I was away.
So I was thinking of starting out with PF jars because of the simplicty. After I have my first fruits I would like to get a tissue culture from them on agar, MEA or cornmeal dextrose agar, and then getting it to LC which I am most comfortable working with from past experience. As I get set up and comfortable with the processes again I want to move on to manure, straw and manure straw composts. I got great results in the past useing manure straw composts, and it is a beautiful site to see a big bed in full flush. Does this sound like a decent plan?
Thinking of taking advantage of one vendors special which is 7 syringes for 50 bux. How long will the syringes remain viable in the fridge? Can syringes really be autoclaved and reused?

Sounds like a good plan to me. Welcome back to the hobby...
I'm not sure how long a syringe would remain viable in the fridge, but once you start getting fruits you can practice spore printing and syringe making as well!!
I regularly PC syringes and needles and reuse them, although I tend to use less and less syringes and more and more Grain to grain transfers. 1 syringe > 8 grain masters > g2g transfer to 8 jars from each master... 64 jars from one syringe! Could even take it to the 3rd generation for 512 jars! That spawn just keeps expanding!
Have fun and Good luck...

anyone on the question of spore syringe longevity under refrigeration? I doubt I want to do enough jars at 1 time to use up 7 syringes, but the deal is so good and they srea nice strains.

I searched for "long +syringes +keep" and it gave me over 800 threads. I read a few and the general consensus seems to be the earlier you use them the better with about a year being the aim to use by period, there are also some reports of 6 year old syringes working. Well made syringes + good storage seem to be the key!

i cant say for certain how long they remain reliable in the fridge but ive used a couple of syringes that were left in a closet for 1 1/2 years and they still worked.

Wow, thanks guys. that will do just fine, I was really planning on useing them all within a 2-4 month period of time so it seems I am well within the safe zone. Thanks for the search Shaggy, I guess I could have done that if I wasn't brain dead this morning.
So I guess it is time to rock on and take the plunge.
