Very stuck
    #8142464 - 03/13/08 05:41 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

The heat over here has been getting to me, and I didn't think all the way through.

Anyways, I hydrated a brick of coir, and have 2 colonized quarts of WBS jars.

Can I just sterilize vermiculite and use it as my casing? Will I get good results, since Im using coir as the substrate?

Also, do I need to sterilize the coir before mixing it in with substrate, or do I just mix once it's hydrated?

should the coir be around room temp? thanks

Vermiculite is fine as a casing layer.

Most people pasteurize coir although I have used it successfully without doing anything at all to it. You will want to do that after it's hydrated if at all.

Room temperature should be fine.

Vermiculite has no nutes in it. we use it for moister and cantam barrier. im sure other things too, but ppl use verm all the time as casing or in poo. there is many uses for it.
it's ok to sterilize it too.

Yes, search out "verm +case"

You need to pasteurize your substrate (coir) before you spawn your WBS to it.
Search out "pasteurize +coir"

should the coir be around room temp
Make sure you wait until the substrate has cooled after pasteurization before mixing it up with spawn. High temperatures will kill the myc. Room temp is good.

Good luck

You don't even need a casing with coir. You don't want to sterilize the coir if you already pastuerized it. The coir should be completely cooled before spawning.
