If you're in good with someone who works at a restaurant, ask them to get you a pickle bucket (free). Other products come in 5 gallon buckets, but most restaurants that use pickles throw out a 5 gallon bucket every week. Or, check the hardware store, they carry them for 5-8 bucks.
You can heat the water on a stove top, using a thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature.

Hi, I just did this tek for the first time a week or so ago and it is working so far.
I bought a 5 gallon bucket at home depot for $3, was right at the front of the store near the registers.
Then took a cooking thermometer ready, got hot tap water (4 quarts aka 1gallon) and put it into a pot, heated it on the stove top until 160 degrees, pour into 5gal bucket with 1 brick of coir already inside and cover with foil. Exactly 1 hour later it was ready to go. It was still warm but not too hot.
It is colonizing at a nice pace.

You dont even need to boil water or measure the temperature. Just use hot water from your sink, it should be hot enough.

A thermometer is easy to find, but in case you don't have a thermometer for it yet. Use your stove to heat the water until it is way hotter than you would bathe in but not quite hot enough to be simmering. Really hot bath water is about 120 degrees F. Water simmers at about 180 degrees F.

Temperature really doesn't matter here. Get any big container, put the brick of coir in there, and pour a bunch of water in it. The water can even be cold, it will just take longer to expand.
In reguards to thermometers for pasteurizing or other things, brewing thermometers are great. Brew stores, ebay...

Some people like to pasteurize their coir, and pouring cold water on it and just hydrating it doesn't do that. It cuts out a small vector for contams, and many of us feel it's better to be safe than sorry.

agreed always pasteurize if not one day u'll be sorry you didnt. i pasteurize for 3 hrs. its a over kill but in the long run it keeps my mushy's happy. plus i get the coir from the hydro store it contains many nasties in it.
the best part about me pasteurizing is i use a eletric turkey fryer. set it and forget it

I just use a 5gal bucket/lid, I boil a gallon of water then pour it in the bucket stir it up until it is all hydrated then put the lid on and let it sit until it's around 70-80f(2-3hrs)
Make sure to add used coffee grounds to the coir anywhere from a cup full to 80% can be coffee.
this tek works for me every time!
to answer your question use your stove & a thermometer.
