Jar grow rates, dead jars, old spores, etc
    #8135265 - 03/12/08 01:19 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Hey all,

PF Tek 3 weeks into inoculation of 24 jars which were incubated between 70-83 for a week (bad), then I pulled the plug and keep them at 75-77 on without a heat pad... They're in a cooler.

I'd say 5 jars have about 80% covered around the glass of the jars. Does that mean those are about 80% done?

We have 10 jars that around between 20%-60%

Bad news: 10 jars that haven't grown at all. I believe I saw that all of those jars are of a different syringe and strain that are about 2 years old. kept at room temp. I read they would work still, but it appears they don't. We have one jar growing that has old spores in it, which really throws me for a loop.

Question 1: Is there anything to jump start jars? If one jar is growning maybe the others still will. Should we grab a new syringe and inoc those jars again? Or start over from scratch.

Question 2: Because our jars are so ranged in growth, should we pull out the 80%'rs next week if they're done (how do you tell?) and leave the others in? Or should we wait until all our jars are totally done?

Question 3: Much debated between my friend and I, we have jars with straight lids, but we argue about leaving the myc in the jars or taking it out for fruiting. I read growing in jars helps keep it moist and not dry up, but does it have an effect on how many grow / weight? Any info on this is much appreciated.

Thanks for your time and help.

From what Ive gathered here lately I'll try my best to provide good info..

Q1. No (but I found that 78-80F makes things move along but may/will cause contams (if any) to move along too. No, never reinoculate a jar, unless you want to experiment, it's better to use your spore on new jars rather than use them to reinoculate old "already failing" jars and end up having the same question in 2-3 weeks.

Q2. wait until the glass has 100% mycelium coverage, then when you have decided theyre 100% covered wait a week to make sure its had time to finish colonizing through the center of the cake, you cannot see in there can you? If you have waited a good week after deciding they (or 1 jar) were 100% colonized do w/e you want.

Q3 huh? are you talking about invitro?

Q3: Back when I did invitro half pints I remember getting about 3.5 grams dry from each one. The yield can be a little better for birthed cakes.

birthed cakes meaning, upside down, jar off, in the grow chamber?

My partner wants to keep in jars for the first flush, then "dunk" and grow outside for the 2nd.

If you don't really want to shoot for "max yield
" and get as much crop as you can, then try invitro.

If you want to try and get the max amount of crops the cake may yield, then birth them. ie: remove from jars and place in terrarium.

Then what exactly is the benefit of keeping them in the jars - Invitro? If you get more by fruiting them without jars (birthing).

Also, anyone else have some input on question 2? We should have a couple jars done by this weekend, but some won't be done for another 2 weeks. I'm leaving over seas in about 6 weeks so I'm hoping to have some done before I leave. (My partner is taking over the grow while I'm gone)

The benefit of the invitro is that you don't have to make a fruiting chamber and it takes up less room. Question 2: There is no need to leave completely colonized jar in an incubator, even if there are other jars that aren't done.
