Please Help! Undercolonized Poo Bag Problem!
    #8138107 - 03/12/08 05:57 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

I'm freaking out because I just went to cut up my mycobag contents and place it in my FC, and it doesn't seem "strongly" colonized on the inside, I need some advice on what to do!!

The bag: 5lb hpoo, verm, straw, coco coir etc. bag knocked up w/ Golden Teacher LC. It colonized for over a month until it was fully white, then I let it go another 2 weeks just to make sure the inside was colonized too.

THE PROBLEM:
I cut the bag open tonight and the substrate is consistently colonized all the way through...but it seems weak and is only a light white, and still mostly a dirt color. Again, the outside myc. is a fluffy healthy white, but the inside is a weak white all the way through. It barely holds together in your hand.

I still chopped the block into 4 large chunks with a sterile knife as planned, and put the blocks into the FC. My FC is a small aquarium with a custom Fogger/fish pump setup for Rh and fresh air, and the 4 cakes couldn't even fit in all the way so I crumbled one and cased it with verm in a different shape.

I'm kinda freaking out that I'm gonna loose this project to contams now and I'm not sure if I should crumble all the cakes or what, so please....NEED SOME ADVICE!

Just guessing, but if it was finished outside for two weeks, it's probably colonized. I've shredded cakes up and the inside is gonna be mostly the color of the substrate. The only thing that bothers me is the crumbling, though that might just be the substrate a little too dry.

Best you can do is just watch them and maybe prepare a new bag just in case. I've played with shredded cakes for spawning to a pasteurized substrate, but I don't know if cutting cakes or bags up is such a good idea, colonized or not. Maybe someone else can offer more advice.

The one reassuring thing to me that you reminded me of was that the whole cake (although not solid) was at least consistent on the inside.

The main thing I was worried about is how can I increase my chances of the 5 lbs. worth of cake surviving. Right now I got the fogger/air pump going to the tune of 90% Rh, just no light....to see if they will colonize a little more before I try fruiting.

I do have another similar bag colonizing right now, and although I try not to count my chickens before they hatch, I really wanted this batch to work out to test my new FC set-up as well as the GT strain.

Thanks for the input Rahz, and any tips on how to breath more life into these pre-mature poo cakes is welcome!
