Is it better to grow from jars or plastic containers?

From all the teks I have read, the said to use the 1/2 pint jars to grow my mushrooms. But a friend of mine has never grown mushrooms this way, he uses those clear plastic boxes you keep food in. With this method he has been very successful. Which should I use for my first time growing? I am kinda confused. Any advice?

It's really up to you. It's a matter of preference and your resources (i.e. whether you use a PC or microwave)
I have never owned a pressure cooker, so I've never invested in glass canning jars ever. I guess you could buy the plastic lids for them, but I could never be fucked. I use the microwave for all my sterilization.
I always just bought plastic GladWare containers when i lived in the states (with the bluetops). Recently I've just been using regular old generic polypropylene containers (safe for microwave and freezer)
They work fine.
But at the end of the day, i'd imagine the glass jars are preferable. The plastic ones will bend under pressure/force which can cause lots of problems(like "sucking" air into containers, letting dry verm slip down the sides, etc)
If you know what you are doing, the plastic containers work fine. Plus you can seal them off with tape or plastic wrap under the edge to prevent any air being sucked in.

I've actually always had better success with plastic... I find they colonize faster in it than glass in side-by-side experiments (maybe plastic "breathes" more?).
I am presently trying out rubbermaid twist n' seals (or something). They are just over a half pint (by like 12 ml or something) and shaped like a dome (so when you birth it it falls out easily.) Wonder what effect the shape will have on the pinset, though... I think I'm making the switch to bags soon though...

Would the speed be different with the plastic than the glass?

I used something called the myco-box (bought from Applied microscience, here in the uk) its basically just a polypropylene plastic container with a lid that has one of those tabs you rip off to open. If you buy the kit you get everything for growing or you get the pre-sterilized myco-box on its own.
The lids have filters attached too and the tubs are re-usable i believe. This was my first venture and it worked great and got 4 or 5 flushes too. ordered the starter kit version of this which uses the same type of jar but in 500ml form and you do all the brf cake prep and pc'ing yourself but for a lot less than buying a pre sterilized kit or box.
But i geuss it is down to preference, and what you prefer working with.

I use Ziploc twist n loc..I've tried the rubbermaid and they are way small for my time and money.

I have also picked up the twist n loc like the one above as well as their 32 oz counterparts.. haven't had the joy of busting that out yet..
I use alot of PP and glass jars..and I PC
PCing doesn't damage the ziploc containers at all..no bending, and the leakproof seal is A+!
Never used the microwave myself..doesn't seem failproof. But I dare not bash what works for many others.
I recommend most pp containers as long as they stay sturdy..
And I've grown side by side as well..and have found nothing spectaculer in the differences of glass vs plastic.
How many times did you perform the test?
Maybe one mycelium was more aggressive than the other?
Anywho..just something to think about..later!
