First Time Casing Troubles
    #8135562 - 03/12/08 04:18 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Hey Guys,

Im gonna give a little background so you know where Im at. Its been a little while since Ive posted, but I have now upgraded to casings. Ive got a Martha set up with a Cool Mist running 24/7. The interior temps range from 73F-77F and humidity always stays above 95%.

The mycelium was colonized on rye grain and cased in a 50/50 Peat Moss and Verm mixture. I wasnt able to find any limestone locally (one store had it normally but were out of stock), so I went ahead and decided to risk it.

The casings sat in the incubation chamber (88F) covered in tin foil for about 2 weeks when mycelium started showing on the top of the soil. Then I moved them into the Martha.

For the first week they were in the Martha, the temps were around 65F. It is still pretty cold around here and it was hard to keep my kitchen that warm. So I moved the Martha and now its at optimal conditions.

My problem is, the shrooms are only growing in patches and not very large. My soil also seems pretty dry (Ive started misting every once in a while). Is it a water problem? A pH problem? Ive taken some pix so you can see whats going on.

Also, I must note, I am using clear plastic containers and the casings started to pin all around (sides, top, and bottom), so Ive since covered the sides with Duct tape and kept the bottoms on the black shelves.

Pins All Over

I've got two more casings that Ive just added to the Martha that seem healthier and more moist. They havent started pinning yet, but hopefully soon!

mushrooms are 90% water. if it looks dry, make sure you mist it a lot.

I do know they need lots of water, but I didn't want to mist them too much because loose water on the mycelium is bad isn't it? I was hoping the water in the air and a couple mists a day would be ample enough.

Mist from a distance. Don't soak them or leave water puddled up on them. Just a light mist from afar.

i disagree with this.

mist the hell out of them! i keep my trays as moist as they can be without forming significant puddles. There will be large water drops all over my mycelium but it has yet to cause any harm whatsoever. Keep in mind though that I also push a lot of FAE to combat the heavy moisture.

To put this into perspective. My FC has a cool mist humidifier with an ultrasonic and a 4 port hydroponics air bubbler running 24/7 and I mist heavily at least twice a day. Perhaps it is too much but the results so far have been very successful with this particular setup.

Thanks for the tips guys, I will start misting the dry casings a few times a day and see if things start to change for the better.

For my two new casings, the casing mixture is nice and moist, but I'm afraid the top layer of the casing might be too thick. Mycelium 'hairs' are showing on the surface, but the actual mycelium body is below the surface a bit. Will the mushrooms pin right through the soil or will I have to take a little off the top? (Which is the mistake I made for the first two I think.
