Absinthe Legalized In Maryland
    #8134538 - 03/11/08 10:29 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

They called it the green fairy, and they said it could drive you to peaks of manic creativity -- that is, if it didn't first drive you mad. Countries banned it. Teetotalers reviled it. Meanwhile, aficionados built an entire black market around it.

But after decades steeped in mystery and myth, absinthe is forbidden no more, and people are lining up to see for themselves what the green fairy is all about.

It took a legion of lawyers and four years of legal wrangling with U.S. regulators to get it back into the country legally. Since the ban was lifted last year, a handful of companies have been vying to cash in on what they hope will be a new generation of absinthe lovers.

To that end, a small army of Maryland's tastemakers and liquor industry heavyweights assembled yesterday at a Baltimore restaurant, Ixia, for a taste of the notorious drink -- an invitation-only affair organized by one of the three major brands now approved for U.S. distribution.

"After the first glass you see things as you wish they were."

-- Oscar Wilde

But absinthe is more than what comes out of the bottle. An entire ritual surrounds its consumption. At yesterday's event, as in centuries past, about an ounce of absinthe was poured into a glass. The liquid, a Swiss brand called Kubler, looked as clear as water. An absinthe spoon, with intricately carved holes, was balanced over the glass, and a cube of sugar was placed on the spoon. Then, icy water was poured over the sugar, which melted into the liquid below.

The liquid, once clear, turned more milky with each drop of water, a process known as the louche, which in French means "shady."

"It's like a jolt of black licorice," Reagan Warfield, 27, a Baltimore DJ, said after his first taste.

Then he took another sip. "I mean it's fine, but where are the hallucinations? I haven't seen anything except the fairy models floating around."

The fairy models -- in short skirts, pink wings, green body paint and little else -- flitted about without tasting the absinthe.

"We're not supposed to drink anything, so I don't know what it does to you," said Shannon Semesky, 23, of Baltimore. "We're on the job, you know."

Chronic abuse has led to hallucinations, not just simple recreational use. That shit is blown way out of proportion.

That artist that cut is ear off is said to have been addicted to absinthe.

absinthe was cheaper than most liquor back then so it was pretty common

I believe there was a time when absinthe was easier to make with more chemicals in it. I think it was much easier to just put whatever in anything and sell it then. Now, the governments regulate everrything to keep us "safe" from these bad things.

"Among his arguments was that people were already selling absinthe throughout the country, albeit illegally, largely online. To make his point, he had with him a bottle of absinthe obtained through such illicit channels."

Wow, sooooo does this mean pot will be made legal? I mean, it's much easier to get pot than it was to get Absinthe when it was illegal.

Also, I love how research proved that absinthe doesn't cause hallucinations, and this data is accepted, but all the research done to support the use of medical marijuana is apparently bunk. What a joke.

I guess because it's alcohol it's accepted, but I'd love to see the court's reaction to bringing a bag of pot into the courtroom...ya know, just to "make a point."

I wonder if that's just "bullshit" left over from the days where it wasn't legal.

2 years ago there was a goth/bondage bar in LA on the sunset strip I went to and they had "absinthe" but it was some nasty ass knockoff. Everyone was all fascinated with it telling me to watch out because it would knock me on my ass

It was total bullshit. It was about as strong as a regulzr drink and was designed to taste like the real deal, but of course it was bullshit.

I'd imgine there are plenty of companies out there calling their drinks "absinthe" just for trendy purposes even though it ain't the real deal Holyfield.

When I had absinthe (imported from germany) we had taken the sugar cube, dipped it into the absinthe, placed it on the spoon above the liquor and then set the sugar on fire. Letting it melt and carmalize slightly in the spoon before mixing it in (and not setting the liquor on fire which can happen.)

I didn't see anything, but it was an interesting taste. And the drunk was more of a "focused", I can actually concentrate think, and have a conversation, drunk. My friends and I stayed up late that night, enjoyed our selves and no one got sick that night (which at the time happened a few times)

Can't wait till it's legal south of the mason dixon line

I orderd some off of ebay a few years back... was just a little bottle with some green liquid that you mixed with a vodka or something.... no sugar cubes or processes... just a "mix" that make my shit green and taste like liquorice.

I didn't notice ANYTHING at all... I think I got ripped off.

It's not that big of a deal. I like it as a drink, but it's going to get you drunk...that's all.

I've always found that absinthe gives you a feeling of being drunk and high at the same time, but the whole hallucination thing is false. As for lighting the sugar cube on fire, that is a czech ritual and any absinthe enthusiast would string you up by the testicles if you told them that was how you prepared it.

no one really knows why Van Gogh did what he did.... but ppl like to blame the absinthe.

There were a lot of theories that he was a skitzo or had syphallis, swallowed painted, was bipolar, etc.

I know about all the theories, but his absinthe addiction is well documented.

My art teacher showed us a whole bunch of stuff on him and his life, but unfortunatly, I still can't remember the guys name until someone else says it.

actually it's not chronic abuse that gives you hallucinations it is the chemicals thujone and wormwood. They are mild hallucinogens, similar to thc but a little more potent and also more addicting. You can't hallucinate on the absinthe in the U.S. because part of the deal in legalizing it was that the FDA gets to restrict the abouts of thujone and wormwood in the drink. There is still some in the U.S. version but not near as much as the European drink.

I might believe you if science didn't disagree. Sure, they add to the feeling, but I've seen research that says that the amounts ingested are too small to have a "hallucinagenic" effect.

Maybe back in Van Gogh's time half the shit was straight thujone, I don't know. But I can tell you it's not like that now. Even Europe cracked down on that shit.

Besides, "similar to THC" is a terrible thing to say in support of your arguement. THC is very NOT hallucinagenic to most people.
