Dead Leaves
    #8133402 - 03/11/08 07:11 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

This is just something I thought of while sitting outside smoking one autumn day.

What kind of results do you think one would attain if they gathered a large amount of fallen leaves, crushed them into a powder, pasteurized it, and used it as a substrate / casing supplement? Would it even contain a significant amount of nutrients?

Please, stop me if this is an asinine idea.

from flashlight as cavers went by so yes, it's possible to
do what you describe so hop to it and give us some results

i say go for it..

i have found a ton of intricate mycelial networks formed solely on dead leaves while hunting in the woods. in fact, I have seen many mushrooms growing directly from leaves.

I say it's worth a shot. let us know how it goes

i would think there would nt be enough nutes in the leaves unless they had been decomposing for a while. i remember a thread a while back saying that dead leaves and grass clippings wasnt sufficient for cubies

I think its well worth an experiment. I don't think you would want to grind them into a powder though. You would be better of just chopping them up. But I wouldnt use it for casing, I would try using it as a substrate. Mix them with some coffee or blood meal and then some verm to fluff them up a bit. It would be interesting to see what type of results are produced. I'm sure it would work, its just a question of how successful it would be.

Ok, I'm going to do it! My jars are occupied at the moment but in about 5 days they won't be.

Since I don't have much vermiculite, I'm only going to do 3 or 4 jars like this. I'll tweak the ratios on each. I'm going to use the leaves (there's plenty laying around right now), WBS, vermiculite, and some coffee as you've suggested shroober. I've never used coffee grounds though so I'm going to go read up on that. I've been wanting to for a while now, so this is a good excuse to start trying them out.

The only thing is, the sterilization method. I guess I could just go ahead and pressure cook it, hopefully it doesn't fuck up the mixture or anything. I don't see why it would, but... we'll see.

And indeed, upon further thought, powderizing the leaves it wouldn't be the best way to do it. I think the leaves should be allowed to retain some of their surface area - I think it would be more beneficial to strong mycelium growth. I'll just crush them up a bit with my hands and throw 'em in the mix.

edit: I was driving to the store and saw a pile of decaying pine leaves. You can guess what I immediately thought... it seems like it could be a good straw substitute, perhaps. We'll certainly see. I can't wait to do this experiment

If they'll grow on the stems of a maryjane plant then I'm fairly certain you could use leaves. You going to do a hydrated lime wash like straw?

I think I'm going to have to, especially for the pine needles. I did some searching and have learned that they are very acidic, so I might not use the pine needles at all unless I can find a way to stabilize the pH. Or I may just break a small amount in half and throw them in after soaking for a long time, just to see what happens.

yeah, you should try to extract all the pine needles if possible, try to make it only leaves. And perhaps you could soak the leaves in diluted coffee water

it would be great if leaves turn out to be an acceptable substrate supplement for things like coir or straw, im sure a lot of people will bash the idea but it is certainly worth some experimentation, thats what this hobby is all about

I've used leaves, but dried grass clippings and dried weeds are better. Manure is better than either one, so if you have some, mix it in with the leaves so it works better.
