OK OK OK OK.....yes i am a newbie......... Recentlly someone went out of town and could not get to a switch to turn a light on for these little guys here. They went about 24 hours with no light, and no fanning. here are some pics: with light, before out of town adventure same shot, 24 hours with no light another part of the casing.. We noticed that the little guys in a few of the photo?s have taken a little twist back towards the dirt....could this be cause of the no light???? plus i think the last pic it looks like the cap is opened, but it does not look very big. None of them do actually...... ohh and these are hawaiians...........am i worried over nothing? thank you all for helping.....please no comments on the fact that patching was not done enough and the pin set will be no where near even.....already learned that lesson..... TMeister you have helped me in the past, can you lend a comment here?

ok the light is not as important as fanning is, by fanning you are exchanging the old stale air for new. while mushrooms need only a little bit of light a day, they do need a few air exchanges to prevent them from abhorting, which it looks like some of yours are. going away for a few days can wreck your crop, so watch out next time. just put them on the regular daily regimen of fanning/misting and lil bit of light. I guarantee your next flush will be better.

Shrooms do not need light to grow healthy. They are no plants. They do need light to know where to grow to. So, leaving them 24 hours with no light is not a problem really, at least not THAT problem i see on the photos.
Fanning can be a problem though. Or should i say no-fanning IS a problem. The more air exchange, the highest percentage of a healthy shroom. Fanning also keeps away the nasty green mold. BUT - as my experience showed, too much fanning can dry the shrooms and make them white lol
So the problem on all those fat-asses i see and all those aborts-to-be could be the fanning thing but also could be a numerous other things in your casing and your terrarium. Is air humid enough? What did you use as a casing material?
Hope they will get better by tommorrow, do them good fans.

well they were originally jard with a birdseed tek....the casing material is 50/50 peat/verm currentlly they are getting fanned once a day.....maybe someone should do it more often huh? the humidity, has been the hardest since the beginning....i am pretty sure it is OK now.
they are planned to be fanned, 2 more times today..... we shall see what happens.

Stamets has written in his famous book "the mushroom cultivator":
Primordia formation and Cropping phases: 1 - 3 air exchanges per hour... humidity must be 95-100% when forming primordia and later on must be around 90%, so if you can keep humidity around 95% it would be cool.
but you need more more fanning than once a day!!!!! i think this is the main cause of your problems.

Hey Ghost! Happy to put in my 2 cents for ya...
As many have already said, and I agree, I don't think the lack of light for 24 hours will ever hurt. I think your problem is mainly too much humidity and CO2. Mainly humidity. You've got that tray sitting on a thick layer of moist perlite and the walls of the tub are heavily coated in condensation which tells me by experience that you're over 97% humidity. I would take out the perlite altogether and fan at least 3x per day.
By the way, whoever told you those are Hawaiian strain is I think mistaken. They clearly look like the Ecuadors I have growing now. (Except mine are straight)

ummmmmmmmmmm
the person who supplied em......HAHAHA
i think maybe the syringes where marked wrong...... ut ohhhh.
and the perlite can be taken out if you think that will help?
but then if i take the perlite out won't that mean, it needs to be misted?
also, if i start fanning it more often 3+ times a day....won't that lower the humidity? so then the perlite can be left alone....

The perlite should come out. You don't need to mist during fruiting. The humidity will be near perfect with no perlite and fanning 3x per day. I have several tubs with casings that I do this with and all fruit fine.

here is another pic......question.... is there anything to worry about on the big one in the photo?
where close to the top there is some discoloration, looks almost wet...
again, is this normal?
and the perlite will be taken out here in about a hour or so.....is it ok, just to dump the perlite in a garbage bag..........and then put the casing back into it as is? do i need to take the time to wash out the entire container completelly? So if there is still some perlite sticking to the walls and such , just leave it in there?
i guess i do not want to keep the casing out on the table for too long....but you are probablly gonna tell me that would do it some good huh?

Don't worry about the casing being out of the tub for a half hour, it'll probably help more than harm (as you suspected I'd say). I'd take the time to clean the tub thoroughly, better safe than sorry.

So with casings, you don't need perlite or misting? The casing has enough humidity on its own? I have read that you need to atleast mist after fanning..... but I don't know as I am not to that point yet....

I have a tough time getting the humidity to go below 95% with a good moist casing in the tub, even with lots of fanning and passive air exchange.

OK perlite is now in a trash can far far away....... i cleaned the tub out, washed, dryed, and rubbed with alchol(lightlly), then dried again.....
casing is now back in her home..........checked the meter just a little while ago, and the temp was 82 degrees, and the Humidity still read "HI". Cheap meter, lol
will take a photo, and post in the morning.
thanks to all

ok naturally there has been no change in the group here in the second pic. I think it is safe to say that they are R.I.P. I am gonna continue to watch them and fan at least 3+ times today. Another Question i have, is do you think i should go ahead and put the, all curly Q looking, ones out of their misery?? Are they aborts? Humidity still read "HI" , Temp still around the low 80 degrees. (over night) Is there any way to Lower the Humidity? Thankx

Yep dude, pick those fuckers and start drying them right away, or eat them. Just wait for the next flush and be more careful with rh and o2 build up. Do you have a hygrometer? if not you should go pick one up, they're not that expensive. Good Luck

I agree with what has been said. It has been my experience that perlite and casing = to much humidity. Go to Radio Shack or http://radioshack.com and pick up a digital hygrometer/Therm - They are like $29.99 Well worth the investment. With a good hygrometer you will be able to tell when you will need to mist. Also, as far as light goes cut a hole in the top of your lid and glue a piece of plexiglass on it. This way it will get plenty of ambient light for the mushies to grow. It has been my experience that you should fan the casing twice to three times a day. Good luck and may you have many good growing experiences.
Peace out!

Do you think it would work to use a small fan (like a PC power supply fan) and a timer to vent the system periodically? Reason I mention this is that timers tend to be more reliable than people in remembering to do the necessary ventilation...

Yeah, certaily you can. You can even get constant air circulation by using a fish tank air pump. You just need to run the hose through a jar of H2O2/Water or put the pump in a filter box to keep out contams.
