http://www.teslamotors.com/
I want one of these. I think that probably tops the list for speed of electric cars. (beside oddball projects by some MIT student)
As far as internal combustion goes. I guess hybrids offer the most mpg.
http://www.calcars.org/vehicles.html
Plug in hybrid cars offer FAR more mpg (up to 105) than any hybrid currently in production. Toyota is offering a 100mpg hybrid in 2009 (maybe).
Then you have biodiesel (which is still internal combustion). this is nice b/c there is no emissions, but you'll have to make all your own fuel or find someone who is making your fuel. Bonus on this, right now, biodiesel usually ends up being cheaper. This may not be true once biodiesel is industrialized.
Other options: hydrogen cars are totally impractical. Hydrogen is retardedly expensive. And the average hydrogen powered car is currently over a million dollars.
You can get your current car converted into an electric car. Lots of specialty shops exist that will do this for you. Or you could find a car w/ only a frame and have someone convert it. I don't know the costs of this, but it can be done.
You could also convert your car to propane. This apparently doesn't take a whole lot to do, but there are not a lot of people out there who are doing it. Right now, propane will get you around cheaper, but propane and gas fluctuate so often that that will go back and forth. Another downside is that you are still putting out pollution, just not as much.
Did i leave something out?

Oh ya, none of these are loud.
I guess biodiesels can be loud, but not any louder than a diesel.

fuck all of that.
ill tell you, straight out, what the nicest, best, and most efficient forms of alternative transportation there is.
take a VW passat TDI (diesel) from 2000-present. they get around 40+ miles to the gallon, and will last for ever. then convert it over to vetgetable oil, and run it, for FREE!

i would still rather drive a grease car (gasoline free) and be comfortable while still getting 45 mph, which is all i think any of these 'hypermillers' can really expect to do on a standard highway situation

When u convert a car over to veggie oil... how much oil does it use? I mean if you have a 10 gallon tank... how far will it get you in mileage? It's nice to have a clean car, but if you only get 10 mpg off of veggie oil then fuck it.
Can you also achieve the same speeds on veggie oil? 60-80-90 mph on a cross country run?
