Slow Progress
    #8131194 - 03/11/08 10:22 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

I am in the middle of a mono tub grow and things seem not to be moving along as expected. The mix is 2 qt of colonized WBS and poo. The temp is my concern. It is 66/67 degrees. One tub shows progress, the other does not. Tub #1 started on the 22, tub #2 on the 28th. #2 is the one showing colonization. Any suggestions?

Probably a slower strain (substrain).
You should be very patient with temps this low.
It could take quiet a while!

Sometimes, myc just stalls, though I wouldn't wanna say this is the case with tub #1.

Again, just be patient and see what's gonna come.
As long as you don't see any mold or smell any bacteria, waiting is better than just throwing it out, isn't it

Would you raise the temps and if so, how high?

Rising the temps, not only speeds up the growth of the mycelium but also increases the risk of contams.

The best colonization temperature is about 82 degrees.
I've never incubated at that temperature and always had quiet good colonization times, but in the end YOU have to decide weather you want a faster growth or be on the safer side.

Isn't 82 a little high? The air temp might be 82 but the inside of the jar or substrate will be more that than. I've held some WBS jars that were colonizing fast and the jar was warm even at 75 degrees.

As soon as your jar feels warm, it has crossed the 75 degrees mark, which doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing.

Anyway, you're actually right!
The chances for the mycelium to overheat is much bigger at that temperature!

The difference in mycelial growth between 75 and 81 degrees is so minimal that it actually doesn't matter weather you incubate at 75 or 81 degrees.

I don't incubate at these temps and never bothered with this topic.

Anyway, you might want to set your incubation chamber at around 75 degrees to avoid heat caused contamination (not really heat caused, but as I said before, contams like warmth!) and pretty much get the same results when, as if you were growing at higher temps.

Any temperature above 83 degrees slows down the mycelial growth, so I have to correct myself, in the way that heating at 82 degrees would only be ideal if you'd be able to maintain the temp, which can be a hard thing to do.
