    #813118 - 08/12/02 03:16 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

ok... about the growing chamber..... i am growing with brown rice and vermiculite 1/2 pint jars first time grower so i got all the questions. i plan on using a humidifier to keep the humidity up, but do i still need a drip shield? im told both yes and no..... and sometimes maybe? acording to the tek im using, its an option but still a good idea.... your thoughts?

I wouldn't bother with it unless it becomes apparent that it is necessary for you. My cat has never used one ever, and he doesn't have any problems with condensation from the lid dropping on the cakes/casings.

it's just not the ideal environment for it. standing water damages mycelium and can breed contams.

As usual, I agree with that cat.
I heard someone here recommend that you should simply tilt the lid if you notice a drip problem?seems like good advice to me. Anyhow, I doubt you will have a problem with it.

it's alright to have a little bit of water on the cakes. as a matter of fact i will sometimes indirectly spray my cakes so they can get some water directly absorbed through the surface. but don't over do it, or the mycelium will become deprived of oxygen and waste will build up.

Even if you find condensation drips to be a problem, you still don?t need a drip shield. Just prop up one end of the terrarium like this:
