    #8129776 - 03/10/08 10:33 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

How would i go about screening 350 lbs of horse manure? It has some rocks and sticks in it.I am unsure on how to construct a screen for such a large amount. Also what type of screen should be used width, size of mesh etc etc(I need something that can be used allot so something durable).Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well first, break that up into easier to work with maybe bucketloads full, Id get some cinder blocks, some 2x4's a staple gun and some screen door mesh from your local hardware store, any grade, doesnt matter. Get your garden hose and go in arms deep mixing and leaching. The rocks and stuff can be picked out while your stirring up smaller quanities.

Holy shit, if you're using all that at once take lots of pics for a growlog.

I'd love to see a field of mushrooms like that, wow.

Lol it is already leeched i just need a good solid way of getting all the sticks and rocks out of it this is going in to my compost pile/tent that i am making (hence the reason for such a large amount of manure. And trust me i am not hand picking out over a thousand pounds of manure for sticks and rocks lol.If i can do this the factory that i work for will start buying my compost since they dont have the space to make there own at this present moment.

After seeing this screen in the catalog I bui;t a unit like this for my garden cart. You could use Hardware cloth of the size grid that you want, or use a piece of fencing material for larger mesh size. The other thing I have seen used for screening compost on a small scale is a screen on a frame suspended by ropes from an A feame structure. this would allow you to shake the screen, work at a comfortable height and to cast off the material that wont go through the screen by tilting it up and casting it off away from you.

Hmm would the manure need to be wet in order for it to work? or at least damp and not bone dry?

I'd use 1/2" hardware cloth. This stuff is called cloth, but its actually very thick (made of metal) and will slice you wide open if you cut it. The holes are 1/2" x 1/2" and you can buy it by the roll. Its kind of expensive but the whole cinder blocks, 2x4, and stapler idea is a good one minus screen for screen doors. Horse shit will never go through that. Get the hardware cloth. It will be worth it. Beyond that, you could lay down a sheet of painter's drop cloth (plastic) to catch the goodies. Hope that works for ya.
