Klipsch La Scala's

I just picked up a pair of these beautiful babies, used of course. They look to be an 80's model but sound crystal clear.
Suckas were heavy at 120# each. It was fun carrying them up the stairs.

So I have a question. Currently I'm using a cheap Sony amplifier to power these and it sounds pretty good but I'm looking for a higher quality amp that is more clean power. I can't spend more than $500 on an amp. What would you reccomend?

Marantz, Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha all make good receivers.

Marantz, Marantz, Marantz.

http://www.classic-audio.com/marantz/mindex.html

I have the 2238B powering some bookshelf Atom V5 speakers made by Paradigm and the thing is musical bliss.

What is the power rating on those speakers? Thats going to play a huge role in determining just how powerful of an amp you will need.

I'm not worried about giving them a large quantity of power. I'm only interested in very clean, quality, power.

frequency response 53Hz-17kHz± 4dB
power handling 100 w max continuous (400 w peak)
sensitivity 104dB @ 1watt/1meter
max acoustic output 121dB SPL

I'm giving them 100w RMS of Sony power right now. If I turn the receiver up to 23 out of 50 volume, the house is rattling down the street!!!

I want a cleaner amp that is lower wattage, that way I dont blow out my ear drums. (or wallet)

Good speaker cable. Not that crap from alien space ships that has been soaked in liquid nitrogen for ten years and costs three bars of gold an inch, but decent cable that didn't come from Radio Shack and is thicker than your little finger.

I plan on getting all new cabling.

Right now i'm contemplating on a marantz sr19 or a mcintosh mc2505 with preamp mx112.

Of course it's a no brainer which is better but we'll see what happens.

I bet you couldn't tell the difference between Monster Cable and a solid unshielded wire. Over a short distance of course .

Driving my altec-19 studio monitors from my 20-watt SE monoblocks, I'm pretty certain I can tell the difference between radio shack cable and decent speaker cable. Monster cable is a rip off as are those specialty speaker cables that have been cold soaked by alien virgins from planet-z. It is amazing how much power is lost with crappy cable. It is pointless to have good speakers, good amps, and connect everything with low grade cable (including interconnects).

Audiophiles only?

Shouldn't this be moved to the Mysticism & Paranormal forum?

I wouldn't worry about it... for whatever reason, those that have poor hearing tend to lash out at those than are able to appreciate quality sound reproduction. I don't know if they resent that there are some of us that can tell the difference between mp3 and a high quality recording while they cannot, or if they think people with good ears are making it up. Granted, there is a lot of gimmicks and scams in the audiophile world, but there is a lot of good wisdom for quality sound reproduction as well.

Very true words. There are of course those that will tell you that you need cable that costs 450 dollars a foot or its worthless. That is simply bullshit. As seuss stated though, there is a significant difference in cables that are improperly shielded or simply aren't able to carry the power load. So while you should not believe everything, to think that there are not differences between a 128k mp3 and a lossless flac isn't very smart either.

i'd go with the marantz. if you want to spring for something like a macintosh, save for a little longer and get a lower end lamm or plineus setup.

a macintosh is good, but it sounds like a macintosh. if thats ur deal, then fine, but it isnt being transparent by any stretch of the imagination.

Active listening takes practice. I thought I was good at it, until 6 years later after mixing songs for that long, I realize how much more discriminative my hearing is now. And having decent digital to analog converters, cables, monitors, etc, ALL MATTER.
