It's not a big deal to most people, but you have to understand Cubs fans, I guess...
Like the old Cubs owner said...
Quote:
Eight-five percent of the people in this country work. The other 15 percent come to this park. They oughta go out and get a fucking job and earn a fucking living. Eighty-five percent of the world is working. The other 15 percent come here.

I just mean the fan base has a tendency towards idiocy.

At least you're passionate. Most of the White Sox fans I meet are lame, although there are some good ones.

They aren't really lame. You probably just ran into them when they were between crack fixes.
Catch them when they're on and you can usually spot them because of their jittery eyes and slightly shaking hands. Careful to approach tehm though, they usually have a shank someplace handy to accost fans of other teams.
Or white people, since the two are more or less mutually exclusive.

Honestly I don't see why this is such a big deal to you, man. Baseball is a fucking business after all.
The field was named in honor of William Wrigley Jr. by the Wrigley family.
If you dont understand why the changing of the field name is stupid, you either havent been to Wrigley, thought about the business model of the Cubs, not familiar with the neighborhood surrounding the park (Wrigleyville), or you are not a Cubs fan. Plus, why cant we just let historic, beloved places be protected? Wrigley is a historic place and now we have Zell's legal team trying to circumvent historical landmark site laws in order to cash in. Home Depot Field? Fuck that.

I more or less grew up at Wrigley. I learned about baseball there, I had my first beer there, I took my first date there, and I got in my first fight there.
I've been to over a hundred games at Wrigley.
I love the Cubs more than my little brother, and I think Wrigley is one of the best places to see baseball in the entire country.
Calling "Joe's Crab Shack Park @ Wrigley Field" changes absolutely nothing.

that's crazy.
I wonder if other historical landmarks could fetch a pretty dollar.
Maybe Alamo Car rental can buy The Alamo and put their logo all over.
"And to your right, you'll see Ford Theatre - oh, I mean, Toyota Theatre...where Lincoln was shot."
Gatorade's Ellis Island. After you get off the boat, Quench Your Thirst ®
Barnes & Noble School Book Depository in scenic downtown Dallas.
Fuck it - just carve a Pizza Hut logo on the Moon already.

You're right, I'm none of those. However, if they tried to change the name of Ohio Stadium I wouldn't much care. In fact, I almost never call it Ohio Stadium as is, I call it the Shoe like everyone else does. They could call it fucking Microsoft Stadium, and we'd still call it the Shoe.
Sports, especially pro sports, are a fucking business man. A business first. If there was no money to be made you better believe Wrigley Field wouldn't even be around.

yes, professional sports are a business. In fact, if you read my posts, you'll see I offer a more sound business plan that will keep fans in the seats, merchandise selling, and increase payroll. And keep in mind that Wrigley Field is a historic landmark - I'm pretty sure Ohio Stadium is anything but.

I'm pretty sure you should practice what you preach and do your research. In fact, according to Wikipedia, Wrigley Field isn't a National Historic Landmark. The Shoe is.
It is a local landmark, and the Wikipedia page says because of that they can't change the Wrigley marquee.

Upon further research I see that it once was, but due to your recent renovations it got stripped of that status. Looks like you guys already blew it.

That is a matter of major contention in the City Legislature at the moment.
The City of Chicago still considers Wrigley Field to be a Landmark Building as is claiming that it has the right to veto any changes to the facade. Sam Zell and the Cubs disagree.

Quote:
Mayor Daley today threw cold water on the idea of relaxing Wrigley Field’s landmark status — and forfeiting 30 years of sales tax growth tied to a Wrigley renovation — to finance an overhaul of the 94-year-old shrine of Major League Baseball.
Daley noted that Wrigley’s historic elements were landmarked in 2004 after years of contentious negotiations with the Cubs that paved the way for the team to phase in 12 more night games.
The designation covers the exterior walls and marquee sign at Clark and Addison, the centerfield scoreboard and ivy-covered brick walls and the uninterrupted sweep of the bleachers and grandstand.
