1 week into 1st grow

Hey gang, first post.
I inoculated on 3/2/2008 and I have some questions. Firstly, I used PF Tek for Simple Minds:
The Tek says to fill jars with vermiculite/BRF and cover with a folded piece of tin foil, then fold up the edges to make at in foil lid. It then says to get a second piece of 5inX5in tin foil and put it on top of the first.
During inoculation, you are supposed to remove the top layer of tin foil and puncture your folded tin foil with the syringe. The tek then says to recover the holes with the 5X5 piece of tin foil.
My jars seem to be going okay for the most part. I inoculated 10 jars and I have no contams so far and some myc growth.
Here are some pics:

However, some of my jars have no myc growth or are only showing growth at 1 or 2 of the four spots that I inoculated each jar at.
I recently read some threads about gas exchange and I began wondering if I am doing something wrong. I found some old posts by RR saying that provided that you have a 1cm layer of dry vermiculite on top of your BRF/vermiculite, you should leave your four inoculation holes uncovered. Correct me if I am wrong as I do not want to be giving out false info in this thread.
I will also include some pics of my incubator:

That is two 30 gallon plastic bins with an aquarium heater underneath, just like on the PF Tek for Simple Minds. Since I am in the northeast and its cold right now I have been using the heater and putting a blanket over my jars to keep as much warmth as possible in. I have also been putting the top on to keep warmth in.
I am looking for some pointers from some more experienced growers. Would you guys suggest that I poke holes in my foil like this:

or keep my jars how they are like this:

Additionally, I am wondering if people think that the blanket could potentially be doing more harm than good by not allowing proper gas exchange. Like I said this is my first time and I'm trying to avoid as many noob mistakes as possible.
I am planning on inoculating another 6-10 jars tonight or tomorrow so any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I don't cover mine and I very rarely get contamination.

As long as your house/wherever that is isn't below ~68, i would scrap the incubator. If you insist, don't set it above 80. As for the foil, I would take the foil completely off and cover the holes with micropore tape; this isn't necessary but it would probably speed things up a little bit.
Definitely looks good though! Keep the updates coming.

Really, I never heard about leaving them uncovered. That would probably have sped up the whole process.
Glad I moved onto grains.

are you using mason jars with lids or glass cups with just tin foil? If you are using masons, scrap the foil.
I'm not sure about gas exchange in pf jars, though.

Come to think of it, I never covered my inoculation holes on PF jars

Looks like an awesome setup.
I would say that PF jars need all the Gas Exchange they can get. Try taking the foil off a few of your jars, and see how much of a difference it makes
