Monsters on BRF!!!
    #8127237 - 03/10/08 12:08 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Here's my grow. I prepared 12 pint jars for inoculation using brown rice flour and vermiculite. I inoculated with Psilocybe Cubensis strain Equador. I had 4 jars contam, because I flame sterilized every 4 jars.

I then crumbled all 8 pint jars in one large ziplock bag and let them "heal" overnight, while I prepared my casing layer. I never dunked them. I used the 50/50 tek with the addition of Sodium Carbonate.

I took an aluminum lasagne tray which measures 8 x 11 x 2 3/4 inches, and put a very thin layer of casing material down. Then I layed the crumbled cakes, yes, all 8 of them, on top of this layer. It almost filled the entire tray. I then covered with as much casing material as possible without overfilling the tray.

I immediately put this in my FC (humidity provided by perlite, FAE proved by fanning with the lid a few times a day).

Within 2 days a few mushrooms were poking up. After 2 more days I was like holy shit, that's almost as fat as my dick!

By harvest time I knew I'd grown my biggest shroom yet, here's some more pics...

I don't know if you guys can see it, but that scale says fucking 112.2 grams. I was like holy shit I thought 30 g , maybe 40, but fucking 112!!!
I didn't even think BRF was nutrituous enough for that big of a cube, especially without dunking first. I know lots don't dunk before the first flush, but I do usually.

Anyways here's a pic of the rest of the first flush.

Total wet weight of the first flush: 361 grams even!!!

What do you guys think? Anyone ever seen BRF perform so well?

I've heard that South American strains tend to grow big, but I've never seen anybody have this large of a mushroom on BRF. The second largest mushroom came in at a whopping 85.3 g.

Comments, Thoughts?

What the hell should flame sterilization be??? never heard of that. Sounds weird!

I guess the reason why you didn't see mushrooms this big from BRF substrate is simply that most people work with straw or other substrates instead of cakes, when it comes to bigger tubs. It's less work and it's cheaper.

If more people would do it, you'd have seen fruits as big as yours, I bet.

Don't get me wrong, this is a hell of fruit, no question about it!

I'm doing the exact same BRF jars but haven't decided whether to case or not. Let me know what your dry weight comes to when its all over with. Congrats

Flame Sterilze = flame on the needle until red hot to kill any contaminate spores that may have landed.

I work in a semi sterile environment (apartment complex), so I can't have a bunch of suspicious looking glove boxes and such. What I've got now is bad enough if someone noticed, but they almost never check our place out.

Thanks for the kind words guys :hippie:

Yeah, that's the way I knew it, but I couldn't think of anything in the context.

So "I flame sterilized every four jars", does mean he AFTER every four jars, so cross contamination had a chance.
OK!

For it sounds like he somehow sterilized his jars with flames

Clearly had some problems to read that info out of this sentence :tongue2:

All that effort to not sound like a dumbass and I say I flame sterilized the jars...

haha, the big one is about 25 grams right now.

I'll be "donating" an oz to a friend/relative, then probably eating the rest or splitting them with my girl if there's enough left over, which there should be...

Their almost dry, I'll update with the dry weight when their done.

Uhm I'm kinda confused on the size of the jars now.

They only had the sizes on the shelf at meijer and not anywhere on the jars, or box, so they may have been half-pints.

In fact, I'm pretty sure they are 1/2 pints.

It took about 3 weeks for the EQ, I also had Treasure Coast going, and they haven't even gotten half way through fruiting yet, very slow.

Thanks for the kind words, I'm hoping someone will see this and say they've done the same with BRF, otherwise I'm going to have to write up a tek or something.

So far it's only shunk a little and it was 20 grams 6 hours ago.

It split open down the middle while it dryed though, kinda gay, I wanted it to stay perfect.

Pics are on the way as soon ASAP (tommorrow) LOL

Very nice sir!
If you can reproduce that result with your LC I'm sure your PM box would be flooded with offers.
Is it nature or nurture? what were the growing conditions?
What would you name the sub strain?

Thanks, I think that I'll get very similar results with my LC, but I'll be inocing grain instead of BRF, so it'll be hard to compare.

Just bigger

I think it was mostly nature, though I do take real good care of my mushies.

The name? How about Psilocybe Cubensis Equador Dillacana? I wouldn't just rename the whole strain like doctor yost did, though. That makes everything way to confusing for everybody, not just n00bs.

I'd love to trade for some Pan. Cyan, though, any offers?

Yeah, that's the way I knew it, but I couldn't think of anything in the context.

So "I flame sterilized every four jars", does mean he AFTER every four jars, so cross contamination had a chance.
OK!

For it sounds like he somehow sterilized his jars with flames

Clearly had some problems to read that info out of this sentence :tongue2:

i've never flame sterilized in my life, constantly wipe with alcohol soaked paper towel though, i've had great success. I also wear gloves, a filtered mask, hair net, and generally don't wear a shirt while doing it though.

I ran out of alcohol wipes, and isopropyl.

Bics are plentiful by my bong station.

Guess anyone who sees you, while doing this thinks you're some kind of lunatic, operating on jars full of brain or whatnot...

Though I do wear clothes, I don't wear anything such as gloves or masks etc.

I guess in the end it doesn't really matter what tek you use, although flame sterilization logically has to be more accurate, since bacterias etc. rather survive alcohol than a flame.

If you prepared your syringe properly and work in an -at least medium- clean environment, there shouldn't be too much trouble with contams on cakes anyway, so in the end, I guess it's simply a matter of personal taste...

Okay, right now the whole batch weighs 40 grams, but since there so big the part of the stem under the caps aren't fully dried. The big one is about 10.5 grams and pretty much done now.

Will update with pics very soon.

Okay, these are the rest of the first flush still wet:

This is the big one dried:

Dry weight was 7.8 grams = 92.1% water by mass.

This is the whole flush dried:

The aborts on the left are mine tonight :mushroom2: Gonna do the lemon juice tek.

Unfortunatly I only got 30.7 grams dry. A bit smaller than expected. Water content average for the whole batch = 91.5% by mass.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, I hope I have as much success as I move onto better methods. (my GT grain jars are almost done )

Peace :hippie:

I got an average of 3.85 from each cake I used in my casing.

Try casing, it really improved my results and I didn't even dunk the cakes at all.
