Spawn Bags...What the Shit.
    #8122861 - 03/09/08 10:06 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

So hopefully somebody will have some greatly appreciated insight...

On the Feb 20th afoaf injected 10 3 lb rye spawn bags w/ injection site (everythingmushrooms.com) with 5 cc's each of spore solution(purchased from Lil shop)2 of these buggers have contaminated with nasty green mold(both texas goliad strain)I tossed those. Also note that the utmost sterile conditions were used for inocculation including spraying the air and injection site with alcohol, face mask, gloves, red hot needle, the whole 9 yards.

A few of the others show slight growth but i fear that some may be getting some pinkish red contaminate.

They are in a closet in an open box with a space heater circulating air throughout the closet.(86 degrees) I think this may be a problem as increased airflow in the closet may be introducing contams. Any insight? Would a heated terrarium really be better?

I feel like these are colonizing very slowly, except for 2 PESA bags which have nice colonization. The others only have small amounts of growth throughout the bag. Is this normal to not see substantial growth by now? It has been 18 days.

I'm considering Starting some liquid culture to inject new bags and start again fresh(not that all is lost in this case because there should be some salvageable bags.

question summary:
1) everything mushrooms...shitty vendor?
2) Open box with airflow in the closet...bad news? is heated terrarium really that advisable?
3) Is the Growth rate to slow? should i see more significant colonization?
3) should i stick with LC so that the mycelium is more healthy and will colonize the spawn bags quicker.

Thanks for the help guys

The space heater can dry out your sub, and introduce contams. Your incubation chamber shouldn't really have any airflow.

and 86 degrees might be 1 or 2 degrees too high, cause myc produces a little heat on its own.

For substrate bags I say take it all the way down to...guess it...75F ! Come back after a month of nothing and then say that the spores never grew. And if your bags are filtered your not even concerned with airflow around them. You just have to breathe them every now and then which consists of deflating the bag slowly by squeezing it through the patch and then letting it reinflate on it's own. For multispore 18 days isn't great but it's not bad. Patience and keep reading.

I also got a spawn bag from where you got yours except I bought the woodlover spawn bag with rye berry. I injected 2 CC's of Ps Cyan spores from Captain Max. It's only been in my Tub In Tub incubator for about a week so no growth yet.

I think with spawn bags you normally have to wait at least 10 days for any growth especially with the spawn bags from everything mushrooms because you can't mix the Rye Berry's after injecting or you'll mix the compost before colonization. The colonization also starts in the middle of the bag so it seems like it would take longer before seeing results.

i had one of these bags bought from a different vendor
and had the same exact thing happen.  i thought i was
completely sterile during the procedure, but it
gave way to mold a few weeks in.

you aren't supposed to incubate the bags because
they naturally have a higher temperature, and if you
do incubate it can add to the chance of getting
contams.

they only thing you can really do is cut your losses
and move on.

There should be NO incubation chamber, because spawn bags do MUCH better when air can circulate around them.

86F is TEN degrees too hot.

Awesome, thanks for the responses guys, Karma to all.

I dropped the temp down to 75 this morning. I had to toss a second bag(both texas goliad, maybe the syringe wasn't sterile) and it looks like one B+ bag may also be contaminated, It looks like a pinkish goo(very small) I'm sure in a few days my suspicions will be confirmed.

RR, do you suspect that the damage has already been done and is irreversible? 2 of the Pesa bags show good growth and the others with slight.

The bags have visible condensation in them, so
I don't think it's a moisture issue, but if it was how would I go about re-hydrating them, and how would I tell if the bags were to dry?

Thanks folks, BTW I think I'm gonna get a pressure cooker today off Craigslist so I can start some LC, seems like a much better idea than straight innoc'ing the bags.

everything mushrooms is a great vendor, think sporeworks

i have a bag with golden oysters going in it right now.  i keep the temp at around 70F and no problems so far.  lots of mycelium and it is colonizing nicely.

I just checked my everything mushroom wood spawn bag and it also has green mold in it. I sent them an e-mail. I don't see how it could of happened unless it wasn't sterilized correct because I have been completely careful.
