Theory on keeping cakes hydrated longer?
    #8123834 - 03/09/08 04:16 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

OK, so I work at a plant nursery where we sell various plants, trees, and chemicals. I came across a product today and was wondering if it would work to help keep the cakes hydrated longer. It is called Soil Moist and comes in a crystalline form. When it is mixed with the soil and watered the crystals absorb the water and turn into a gelatin substance that is supposed to release moisture into the soil over periods of time when the soil dries out. So if it was mixed with the substrate for the culture jars do you think it would prolong the time it takes for a cake to deplete or would the gelatin harm the mycelium growth. Any theories as to what would happen would be appreciated.

Without any knowledge on the topic, would you be willing to ingest this stuff right out of the bag?

You will be eating the mushrooms you grow right? Cuz it'll probably be in the shroomies.

That should for the most part answer your question.

I like free markets and all. Truly I do, at least in general, but there needs to be some kind of oversight in recognition of sustainability. Life works the same way, on a bunch of sustainable systems. Why not honor what made us what we are and take some lessons? Nature FTW!

Just dunk and roll after each flush, it's the tried and true method.

Good point on ingesting the gelatin lol, but in a sense are we not poisoning ourselves anyway?

Mushrooms don't have any bad lasting affect on the body.

Your gelatin stuff might...

True, I guess I'll stick with the dunk and roll but it was worth contemplating, thanks for the feedback.
