only problem I see is that they are transparent...

you could rap the bottoms with black trash bags and duct tape.

like this...

I am also doing my first mono-tub! I have basically the exact same tub. I just plan on lining the bottom inside of the tub with black trash bag to keep the sun out of where i do not want it. I believe you are okay with the transparency as well.

careful when cutting holes in the clear totes.. they tend to crack really bad. the dark colored ones usually have a thicker and easier to cut through plastic.

clear totes always end up in some blood letting.

For a monotob here's what you do to get your holes: Take a soup can and a acetylene torch from Home Despot. Hold soup can with glove and get the rim flaming hot with torch...Presto! Holes . Don't know if that too big or not. Too big, go for something like tomato paste cans.

does anyone else find it next to impossible to find a tote with a clear lid and standard side?

Just take a dark one, but cut most of the lid out and glue in something clear - poly, glass, acrylic, even clingwrap. But yeah they are hard to find in that combination.

 I got my totes at Lowes! Clear lid, decent size. I have never had a problem making holes in the totes... even clear ones. Just set your drill on slow and apply a little pressure and let the drill DRILL into the totes your not trying to puncture it.

i duct tape halves of oven bags over the lid hole

you'll be dissapointed the first time you try to fan your tub if you have a peice of glass or acrylic glued on to your lid (if you use your lid to fan)

the lid bends and the glass doesn't,
whereas the oven bag does

they look like they could be a little tall to get good air exchange into them so you might wanna poke some holes lower in the tub above the substrate to promote some air flow lower down, unless of course you are gonna get fancy with an air flow system

that seems a bit expensive, considering the extra work you are gonna do prepping it.

get one thats not clear, i like the rubbermaid tubs cause they are less likely to crack because of there relative flexability. i usually get mine for about $4 but they are the 18 gal size which in my opinion, are definatly big enough.

any lid that snaps on is good. i use 1/4" weatherstripping around the top lip of the tub, where the top sits, to make sure there is a tight seal. probably not necessary but its cheap and i just like to do it.

i dont have clear lids so i cut a rectangle in the lid and duct tape clear plastic sheeting, rather then spending extra on plexi. i live in a colder area so i use the plastic you put on the inside of your windows in the winter. its like shrinkwrap.
