strange mushrooms
    #8122165 - 03/09/08 01:17 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

I found these pictures of mushrooms from a case and am curious about why they look so strange. Apparently this is part of the third flush from the case, and the others didn't look anything like this. I figured I would inquire about it out of curiosity. Anyone seen this before?

 They look like mutated cubies. Did you use bleach or peroxide in abundance by chance?

I don't think so, there may have been some alcohol used to clean, but not in abundance. Are they still legitimate if they are mutated?

Mh, they look pretty disgusting, in my opinion...

Since the shit on the caps, looks almost like some kind of grafting I'd almost say it's some kind of infection, but I've never seen anything like this before, especially not when the substrate looks perfectly normal...

Maybe it's just some kind of mutation, I can't say.

But it's weird...

It's hard to tell from the pictures because of the flash (I think) but is that mycelium growing on the top of the caps?

That was my first thought too, but if they are 'mutated', are they ruined?

Not that I know of but I'd check out some older threads and see if you can find something on the topic.

Now that I've had another look at the picture you posted it looks a lot like mycelium is growing on the caps. What's your relative humidity like?

The humidity stays around 85 and it gets fanned periodically, everyday.

Mutated fruits can be eaten just like any normal fruit!

It could be somehow "overlayed", or better said dried out mycelium on the caps, but since I never experienced anything like this and never even read about it in here, I wouldn't want to say what it is...

I think it must have been the iso alcohol that was used to clean the lid after the second flush. Thats the only thing that comes to mind...I didn't think of that before. Well like I said, there have been two previous flushes that worked out great and did not look like this. But I really don't think there is contamination involved because there are other pins and nice overlay with no problematic signs. Thanks for the input guys.

nice overlay

??? OK...

Anyway, Iso doesn't do that to mushrooms! If it was, it wouldn't be suggested for our purposes!
PLUS it's used very often for cleaning lids or trays.

There must be another reason for this to have happened...

Maybe we should hire Jupiter Jones and his colleagues to find out

Well yeah, I am not claiming to be an expert at all. I don't know much compared to many of you guys, but that is the only thing I could think might have changed the results. Well I will keep my eye on it and keep posting.

My guess is that you have mycelium growing on your caps, which is caused by high relative humidity. If that's what it is then there's not much to worry about in terms of edibility.

Could be wrong. I'll wait for some of the veterans to chime in in a few hours.

Right, just wait for someone who has experienced this before or knows what it is, for sure.
I wouldn't worry about too much, but even if it was something "bad", it's the third flush, so you should have harvested enough fruits to trip a few times.
Shouldn't be a too big loss...

Oh I don't feel shorted at all. I think there was a total of 280 g's from the first two...but its also 5 cakes under that perfect mix.

Well the caps are about to break open and I think they are ready to be picked. I was hoping maybe one of the experts here could give me some input before they get dry. Thanks.

Looks like a side pinner, which flattens the cap out as it pushes up from the side.
